While speaking to the media on Friday, Luis Rojas announced that catcher Tomas Nido would return from the injured list on Friday and start when the Mets take on the Washington Nationals. Nido was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 16 due to a left thumb sprain.

Nido received a cortisone injection and began baseball activities on Tuesday according to Justin Toscano of the Bergen Record. Rojas had expressed optimism to the media that Nido could be activated on either Friday or Saturday.

With James McCann still working his way back after being placed on the injured list with back spasms retroactive to August 17, Nido could see a majority of the playing time for the Mets until McCann’s return. Nido is batting .231/.275/.343 on the season with three home runs and 13 RBIs over 134 at-bats in 51 games.

While Nido’s offensive numbers are nothing special, consistent playing time could benefit him at the plate. Nido played in 15 games in May and hit .298/.340/.532 over 47 at-bats, including all three of his home runs this season.

Patrick Mazeika has gotten a majority of the playing time while the team’s top two catchers have been out with injury. In their absences, Mazeika hit just .148 over 27 at-bats.

As a corresponding move, Chance Sisco has been optioned to Syracuse. Sisco played in just three games with the Mets and batted 1-4 with a double in his brief run.
