Lots of time over the weekend to think about the plight of the Mets.

First was the Connecticut press asking Fred about the Mets, when he was promoting UConn basketball on SNY. Funny, most people in Connecticut -including me – do not get SNY on their cable stations. Now I’m wondering if he wants to start to include us after all these years. We can already see all the UConn stuff on local TV. Anyway Fred seemed shocked that he would be asked about the Mets, so shocked that he gave strange answers. Then someone asked about Jeff – who is apparently definitely in charge of the Mets team these days. Fred mumbled something and was gone.

It was apparent that Fred really knows very little about the Mets current situation or probably not even their status in the NL East. Any other team owner would have jumped out of the car and started ‘selling’ his team. Now, I’m not even sure that Fred knows who is on the Mets team. Jeff doesn’t know much more than Fred, and relies on Omar and others to keep him current. It’s a sorry mess, that chain of command.

Quite different from the Steinbrenner children who moved right into their roles when Dad died. He had been preparing them for years. But, I digress.

What is strange about this team is that it is not consistent – Jerry puts out a new lineup every day. Not a good idea, you need to get your players used to playing with each other every day. Particularly the infielders who need to move the ball around quickly. And, it goes without saying that Pitchers and Catchers need to be able to finish each others’ sentences.

I’ve watched the Mets since their inception – I saw Tug McGraw (RIP Tugger). I saw Tom Seaver mature into a fine professional pitcher and the Mets – in their foolishness send him away. I saw the teams of the ’80s who were Davey Johnsons’ problem and he sure had plenty with them.

What we have in charge now is a legacy son, who really has no idea what he is doing.

What he is doing is ruining a great franchise.
