When the Mets first signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract, he boastfully proclaimed that the number five starters job was his. In his mind it was never a competition and in fact when asked to comment on it he said,  “Either they give me the job or I’ll go pitch for someone else.”

Garcia started for the Mets today against the Tigers, and according to Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post, “he struggled to reach 85 mph with his fastball.” He also added that most of the reading son his fastball from the scouts guns were in the low 80’s.

Garcia gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in 2.1 innings against a Tigers lineup that featured six minor leaguers. Adam Everett lifted a long homer against him. Everett has hit 37 homeruns in 2,272 at-bats in his career.

His ERA now stands at 14.40 this spring after just three starts. It’s also surprising that he only lasted 2.1 innings this late in the spring in his third start.

Instead of wasting time on someone who is clearly not going to win the job and has already said he’s go play for another team if he didn’t, do everyone a favor and cut him now. Let him go find that other team he was so sure he’d go start for.
