The Mets announced after game one of the doubleheader today that they have called up right hander Thomas Szapucki, who will be the 27th man on the roster. In 2017, Szapucki was one of the team’s top five prospects, but injuries held back his development. The 25-year-old has made two starts for AAA Syracuse this year, and owns a 4.15 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and 10.4 K/9 across 13 innings of work.

In 2019, Szapucki owned a 3.50 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings. It’s been a long road to get here for the lefty, but after his long work, it’s finally payed off and fans will soon get to see the once coveted prospect make his MLB debut.

Dominic Smith is also back in the lineup today bating cleanup, and will man left field against the Colorado Rockies in game two. Smith has been out of the lineup for the last few games while he’s dealt with a minor knee injury. Seeing Smith back in the depleted Mets lineup is very reassuring, especially if he starts to heat up at the plate.
