1914: A young pitcher for the AAA Providence Grays named Babe Ruth hits the first home run of his professional career.
1922: With his 2287th strikeout, Walter Johnson passes Cy Young and becomes Baseball’s All-Time Strikeout King.
1954: Joe Bauman of the Roswell Raiders in the Class C Longhorn League hits his 72nd HR of the season. Bauman never made it to the majors.
1955: Dodgers’ Newcombe hits his 7th HR of the year, a record for pitchers.
1971: In his major league debut, JR Richard fans 15 as Houston defeats the Giants.
1998: Mark McGwire hits HR # 60. It is the fastest anyone ever has reached that mark.
1998: Barry Bonds reached base for the 15th consecutive time, a ML record.
2007: Brandon Phillips hits his 28th HR as a 2b man, breaking the Reds team record set by Joe Morgan.
September 6:
1905: The White Sox Frank Smith no-hits Detroit, 15-0, in the biggest no-hit rout in history.
1943: At 16 years, 8 months and 5 days old, A’s pitcher Carl Scheib becomes the youngest player to ever appear in an AL game.
1976: Baseball comes close to suffering its second on-field fatality. Standing in the on deck circle, Dodgers catcher Steve Yeager is struck in the throat by the jagged edge of a broken bat.
1981: Fernando Valenzuela of LA hurls his 7th shut-out of the season, a ML record for rookies.
1995: In the 5th inning, when the game becomes an official, one of baseball’s unbreakable records falls. Cal Ripken plays in his 2132nd consecutive game, breaking the mark set by Lou Gehrig. The game is delayed 22 minutes while Ripken takes a victory lap around the warning track.
1996: With a HR off of Felipe Lira, Eddie Murray joins Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players with 500 Home Runs and 3000 hits.
September 7:
1908: Walter Johnson pitches his 3rd shutout in 4 days, a 2-hit 4-0 win over the Highlanders.
1911: Phillies rookie Grover Cleveland Alexander defeats 44 year old Cy Young of Boston, 1-0.
1912: Eddie Collins steals 6 bases as the A’s defeat Detroit, 9-7. Just 15 days later, Collins will again steal 6 bases in a game.
1916: The Giants defeat the Dodgers, 4-1, the last in their major league record 26 straight wins.
1945: Joe Kuhel hits an inside the park HR. The will be the only HR Washington hits at home all season.
1952: With a pinch hit HR at Griffith Stadium in Washington, Johnny Mize has now gone deep in all 15 major league stadiums.
1953: With his 125th RBI of the year, Roy Campanella sets the record for most RBI’s by a catcher in a single season.
1962: Maury Wills of Los Angeles breaks the NL record for most steals in a season with # 82. The previous record was set by Bob Bescher in 1911.
1978: Mets catcher John Stearns steals his 25th base of the season, setting a record for catchers.
1984: Doc Gooden fans Ron Cey for his 228th strikeout of the year. This breaks the NL rookie record for strikeouts set by Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1911.
1998: With a blast against Mike Morgan of the Cubs, Mark McGwire hits his 61st round tripper of the season, tying the record set by Roger Maris. Big Mac’s hit came on his father 61st birthday.
