Update – June 23
David Wright has hit safely in his last seven games batting .444 (12-for-27) with two home runs, six RBIs and four multi-hit games in the span. Adam Rubin of ESPN NY writes that Wright hit 11 line drives (netting 10 hits and a sacrifice fly) and he had only nine swings and misses (three in the four games against the Marlins).
David Wright has recently been in a slump along with the rest of team, even though through May 15, he had a commanding lead in the NL All Star voting for Third Basemen. But in the last four days, the Captain seems to be finding his groove again.
In April, Wright batted .245/.301/.275, with no home runs, and 13 RBI’s in 102 at bats. In May, he had a better outcome batting, .320/.360/.461, with three home runs, and 15 RBI’s in 128 at bats, but in 62 at bats so far in June, he is batting only .161/.293/.306, with two home runs and six RBI’s.
“I’ve had some good at-bats, I’ve had some bad at-bats, I’ve hit some balls hard right at people. On the flip side of that I’ve had some at-bats like the third at-bat tonight where I just haven’t felt comfortable,” Wright said after Monday’s 6-2 loss to the Cardinals. “You go through these types of things and granted it’s lasted a little longer than I would’ve liked it to.”
Wright continued, “But it’s gratifying to see results. Lately, I felt like some of the at-bats, the process has been there and I’ve felt good and have had good at-bats — just I’m not seeing the results. You always want to get the result in the end.”
In his last four starts, Wright is batting .333 (5 for 15), with a double, two home runs, three RBI’s and has only struck out twice. It may not be what the fans hoped from Wright, but its a better stretch than what he experienced from June 1 – June 15th, when he batted just .106 (5 for 47), with no home runs and three RBI’s.
The Mets failures this season can not be blamed on Wright’s struggles alone, since with the exception of Daniel Murphy, Bobby Abreu, and Eric Campbell, no other active player is batting over .250 on the season.
But with Wright something has to give and unless he continues to build on his current surge, there is no telling how this season will end up, but definitely no where near 90 wins.
