Fueled by a strong eight innings by Mike Pelfrey, and the offensive contributions of Chris Carter, the Mets beat the Pirates by a score of 7-2

Game Notes

After beginning the game shaky, Mike Pelfrey worked himself into a groove. Big Pelf went eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits, one earned including a home run while walking two and striking out five. Pelfrey was just on point today, striking out lefties and righties, despite the fact that early on, he was hit hard. Mike was throwing fastball after fastball for the most part, and it worked. Great outing, and hopefully Mike can hold this form for the rest of the year.

Bobby Parnell worked the ninth, striking out one and getting two ground balls. When Parnell is at his best, he generates a ton of ground balls, so if this form can remain, I could see Bobby getting a crack at some closing duties

The offense came out as strong as it has in weeks, pummeling Pirates starter Jeff Karstens for seven runs on eleven hits. The Mets put across three runs in the first inning, two in the third and two in the fourth. Clutch hitting that had eluded the Mets before came into play, and clutch hitting sadly has evolved into the Mets hitting with runners in scoring position

Every Mets starter had one hit, minus Ruben Tejada. Tejada did manage a walk though, so its a sign he isn’t hacking, he is just having bad luck.

Only one Met struck out today, Carlos Beltran, and it was one time.

Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan went 5-10 with three runs scored and an SB. Table-setting at its finest.

Turning Point

The Chris Carter home-run in the third after Mike Pelfrey had just given back a run in the bottom of the second inning

Game Ball

Mike Pelfrey, for his stellar outing today. Hat-tip to Chris Carter as well though, for providing the offensive outburst.

On Deck

The Mets will look to clinch a road series win tomorrow, with Jonathon Niese coming up after three strong outings. In his last three starts, Niese has gone 21 innings, allowing three runs on 16 hits with 19 K’s and five walks, with all of those walks coming in an outing against the Phillies. The Pirates will send James McDonald to the mound. Game Time is 7:10 P.M.
