Terry Collins was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN after he finished at the Cit Field Kids event at Citi Field. Here is a rundown of some things he said on WFAN as well as the event.

Fundamentals

Collins is big on fundamentals and he will have the players doing full workouts on an everyday basis to hammer that point home. He learned a lot about the importance of fundamentals in Japan where they value each and every run and don’t like to give any runs away.

Beltran and Pagan

They are going to sit with Beltran at the start of camp and come up with a game plan to see if he can play centerfield on a daily basis. The final decision will not linger and will be made after 10-12 games so that Beltran is afforded enough time to adjust to rightfield. Beltran has already told Collins that he will do what ever the team wishes and whatever is best for the team.

Luis Castillo

Despite rumors that suggested otherwise, there are NO INTENTIONS to cut Luis Castillo before spring training. He will be in camp and compete with Brad Emaus, Daniel Murphy and Justin Turner for the second base job as has been the Mets position all offseason long.

Perez and Castillo

Nobody’s salary will be an influencing factor in determining whether or not they make the team including Castillo and Perez. At the end of spring training they are taking the BEST 25 players to the season opener.

Chris Young

Collins is still waiting for Alderson to do his thing and say it’s official. He has been a winning pitcher in the big leagues. Young is a flyball pitcher and is perfect for Citi Field and will be even better because of the great outfield defense the Mets have. He’s in the perfect place for him to pitch in and succeed.

Jose Reyes

Reyes will leadoff because that is where he fits the best. He is one of the most exciting players in the game and he knows how to create runs and wreak havoc on the basepaths. His legs are healthy, his confidence is very high and he will be one of the best players in baseball in 2011.

Number Two Hitter

Patience will be the hallmark of batting second for the New York Mets in 2011. He expects a number two hitter to be able to take pitches and give Jose Reyes a chance to run. Angel Pagan is exactly the player for that job. His growth has been tremendous and he knows how to excel while hitting in that spot. With those two at the top of the order, the Mets are going to score runs in bunches.

Adding Another Reliever

Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday that the club would likely sign another pitcher to compete with Taylor Tankersley for the left-handed specialist role during spring training. “We’re hoping to sign another one,” said Collins. “It certainly would make it a little bit better for us if we had another one coming into camp, and I know Sandy is working with a couple of people.
