Terry Collins

According to The Sporting News, a panel of MLB managers voted for the Manager of the Year in their respective leagues and 13 NL managers selected Terry Collins as the NL manager of the year.

Paul Molitor of the Twins was voted the AL manager of the year.

Collins got the most votes for the NL with seven. The Cardinals’ Mike Matheny was second with five votes, followed by the Cubs’ Joe Maddon, who got just one vote.

“I’m humbled by that, because there are some great managers in this league,” Collins said about the honor. “But I like to sit where I’m sitting. I like where I’m at – not where some of those guys are. I’m thrilled by it.”

Collins led the Mets to a 90-72 record, snapping a string of six straight losing seasons for the Mets prior to this year.

The Mets won the NL East division for the first time since 2006 and are in the World Series for the first time since 2000.

“He’s been a true professional the whole year. The communication has been good; he’s been great with that,” Michael Cuddyer told the Sporting News.

“He’s letting us go out and play. He’s not a meetings guy. When we were treading water in July and June, he didn’t call us aside … he let us go out and play. He let us go through it, and because of that, we’re a better team.”

The official Baseball Writers’ Association of America awards for the AL and NL managers of the year will be give out following the World Series, along with the Cy Young, MVP and the Rookie of the Year awards.
