New York Mets v Arizona Diamondbacks

Sandy Alderson met with Terry Collins today and the two sides have agreed on a two-year contract extension, reports Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News.

Two team sources confirmed the deal to the News. The deal includes a raise and is expected to be announced Wednesday in a press conference with Collins and GM Sandy Alderson at Citi Field.

Collins has managed the Mets for five seasons, and produced his first winning season in 2015, going 394-416 during his tenure with the organization. The Mets finished 90-72 and won the National League East this year.

Collins retains his title as the oldest manager in baseball at 66, and could possibly add a Manager of the Year award to his mantle later this month.

He has taken his lumps with the Mets during a lengthy rebuilding process fraught with plenty of adversity and even controversy from a dysfunctional ownership.

After the Mets clinched, Collins told reporters that he was honored by all the Manager of the Year talk that’s been circulating throughout mainstream baseball media.

“I will tell you, it’s always nice to get an award,” Collins said. “It always is. But those kinds of things, it’s all about the players, believe me.”

“I’ve talked to a lot of great managers in the game that have won this award hundreds and hundreds of times, and I will tell you what: very few of them have ever said, ‘Boy, I managed my butt off.’ They put the right names in the lineups is what they’ve done, and let them go play.”

I’m not the biggest Terry Collins fan in the world, but what are you going to do? There was no way he wasn’t coming back. Like always, I just keep my fingers crossed and hope none of his frequent bad decisions impact the game or the team negatively, like they did in Games 4 and 5. I congratulate him on the season and the new contract. I hope he learned something from the World Series loss.
