Today I have an early show before the Mets-Nats game on ESPN I talk about the “Wild Card Muck” and how now the Mets must make this a race with St. Louis if they are to have a realistic shot at being the second Wild Card. They can no longer fall behind Pittsburgh and Miami after leap frogging them during a solid week of baseball.

The Mets would not be within a game of the Cards if not for Jose Reyes, who has helped win some games for the team with his speed. He may not be the Reyes of 2006, but he is not far off from the player the Mets let go after the 2011 season.

Yoenis Cespedes has created some debate on the podcast. There is not a clear consensus on whether the Mets should re-sign him this offseason. He has shown, after a year with the club, to be the most dynamic slugger the Mets have had since Mike Piazza. As a matter of fact you can argue that Cespedes has the same flair for the dramatic that both Piazza and Strawberry did.

Out of all the disappointing injury news comes the positive impact of seeing some of the young pitchers step up. The Mets continue to get contributions from guys like Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman and Rafael Montero. Fact is, you need 8-10 pitchers every year to get through a full season. Regardless of the health of the Big Five, there is always going to be a need for depth, and the experience from this year may pay dividends going forward for these young pitchers.

Rich MacLeod of Baseball Prospectus and MLB.com joins me to discuss this and other topics.
