Their first round was a mixed bag, however, taking Kevin Parada and Jett Williams at No. 11 and No. 14 overall, respectively. Parada has struggled so much in the minors he was left unprotected in the Rule 5 Draft last year and went unclaimed. He bounced up and down between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse and was inconsistent at the plate but he did end strong offensively, ultimately finishing with a .702 OPS on the season. He has struggled defensively and still has clear holes in his swing, though. Without further adjustments, it is hard to see a future in the major leagues for him, and he will likely remain unprotected in the Rule 5 Draft.

Jett Williams was a quick riser in the minors, and in 2025 he seemed poised to make noise in the majors in 2026, but his stock has fallen considerably this season with both Baseball America and Pipeline dropping him altogether from their most recent top 100 updates. The Mets traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers in a package for Freddy Peralta last offseason, and it would seem they sold high on him at the right time. Brandon Sproat was the other name dealt in the package. Sproat was drafted in the third round of the 2022 draft but did not sign, so he will be talked about more when reviewing 2023 when they drafted him again.

Jonah Tong was taken in the seventh round. He made his major league debut in 2025 with mixed results but looked better in 2026, pitching to a 3.82 ERA across seven appearances. He had mixed results in Triple-A this year, but everything seemed to come together towards the end of the season.

Blade Tidwell was taken in the second round and was up and down the minors. He flashed good stuff at times but was never able to command his pitches. He threw 15 innings in the majors with the Mets in 2025 to a 9.00 ERA before he was traded as part of the package for Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants at the 2025 deadline. He was not great in the majors in 2026, pitching to a 4.45 ERA across 56 2/3 innings and is scheduled to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

Before the 2026 season, Jacob Reimer was ranked the No. 70 prospect in baseball by Baseball Prospectus. He struggled heavily in the first month of the season but looked much better in the weeks leading up to his injury in June. When he returned from the injury, he looked better under the hood and slashed .280/.375/.434/.809.

Nick Morabito, taken in the second round, has made his major league debut, though it did not go well. Overall, he slashed .195/.283/.244 across 46 plate appearances.

12th-rounder Paul Gervase was traded for Tyler Zuber in 2024, who the Mets later DFA’d and has since bounced around. After a brief appearance with the Rays, Gervase was traded to the Dodgers and pitched a handful of innings in the majors for them. 14th-rounder Cameron Foster was also traded, this time for Gregory Soto in the 2025 season. Foster struggled heavily in 2026 at Triple-A and logged a 9.00 ERA in six appearances at the big league level for the Baltimore Orioles.

Tyler Stuart was taken in the sixth round and was traded for Jesse Winker in 2024. Winker played a large part in the Mets’ 2024 NLCS run, while Stuart missed the entirety of the 2026 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Before that, he was struggling in Triple-A with the Washington Nationals.

Semien, who played four years in Texas and was a key part of its 2023 championship team, connected for his 15th homer off closer Jacob Latz (3-4) to break a 2-2 tie. Latz entered the game early because the Rangers (78-80) are fighting for their playoff lives.

Baty’s slam traveled 455 feet and came after a walk to Bo Bichette and an intentional walk to Juan Soto. The Mets (73-85) have won four of five.

For four innings, it was a familiar sight in Texas: a pitcher named Nolan allowing no hits and racking up strikeouts.

But Brandon Nimmo singled off Nolan McLean (12-10) to start the fifth. He scored on a Jake Burger single, and Texas tied the game at 2-2 when Evan Carter beat out a potential 4-6-3, inning-ending double-play ball with the bases loaded.

After surviving the fifth, McLean retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh and was done. No Met starting pitcher has recorded an out in the eighth inning this year.

Soto hit a two-run homer in the third to open the scoring. It was his 27th long ball in 107 games, and he finished the night hitting .276/.394/.526. Francisco Alvarez went 2-for-4 for his fourth straight two-hit game.

The Mets might’ve had the lead sooner if Nick Morabito could have laid down a bunt.

Morabito couldn’t get one down in the fifth with first and second and no outs. He struck out swinging. He came up in the same situation in the seventh. Again, he failed to advance the runners, bunting foul for strike three. In both innings, Francisco Lindor followed with a fly out, Soto was intentionally walked, and Bichette was retired with the bases loaded.

Devin Williams, pitching for the first time since Aug. 7, worked a perfect eighth. Cionel Pérez finished the game.

Stat of the Game

McLean finishes the year with 194 strikeouts, third most by a rookie in team history. Dwight Gooden, aka Dr. K, is No. 1 with 276 in 1984, which is also the MLB rookie record. Kodai Senga is second with 202 in 2023. In his rookie year with the Mets in 1968, Nolan Ryan struck out 133.

Player of the Game

McLean allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out five. He finishes the season with a 3.16 ERA over 179 2/3 innings. He walked 70. He is the first Met rookie to make 31 starts since Jae Weong Seo in 2003.

On Deck

Zac Thornton (5-5, 3.40 ERA) will make his 15th and final start of the season. Kumar Rocker (5-11, 4.47 ERA) goes for Texas. Game time is 2:35 p.m. ET on SNY.

David Stearns was spotted in Japan watching Teruaki Sato of the Hanshin Tigers and he must have been impressed. The 27-year-old, left-handed hitting third baseman/outfielder homered twice to bring his season total to 34 in 120 games. He entered Thursday with a 1.022 OPS. He is expected to be posted this winter. The Mets, Yankees, Dodgers and Phillies are all reportedly interested.

With the day off Thursday, I took a peek at the lotto standings. The Mets enter Friday with the fifth-best odds (8.75%) at securing the top pick in the draft and a 63.6% shot at a top-six selection, per Tankathon. The draft lottery is in December.

The Mets have picked first overall five times: RHP Paul Wilson (1994), OF Shawn Abner (1984), OF Darryl Strawberry (1980), SS Tim Foli (1968) and C Steven Chilcott (1966).

Nolan McLean (10-8, 3.06 ERA) has not allowed an earned run over his last 17 innings. He will try to keep that and his late push for Rookie of the Year going when the Mets (63-77) host the Giants Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET. Rookie LHP Matt Wilkinson (0-2, 4.63 ERA) goes for San Francisco.

Having previously lost four of five and seven of their last 11 going into the Rays series, the Mets were looking to stop the skid. They did exactly that by winning two out of three.

Without further ado, let’s recap everything from the three games in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

3 UP

DREAM NIGHT

Nick Morabito could not have scripted it any better. The rookie was called back up for the Rays series, and he made quite the impact on Wednesday night. Entering the game as a pinch-runner in the sixth inning, Morabito hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh. He added a single in the ninth and also made a superb diving grab in the outfield. While a small sample size, Morabito flashed promise that he could be an impactful everyday player in 2027.

DEBUT DELIGHT

Dylan Ross celebrated both his MLB debut and his 26th birthday on Tuesday night. His performance proved to be the perfect gift. Ross cruised through the dangerous Tampa lineup, needing just 11 pitches to put together a clean inning. Furthermore, Ross topped 99.2 mph on his fastball, while showcasing that he could become a part of this bullpen in the future.

BOUNCING BACK

Talk about rebounding. Robert Stock was shelled for seven earned runs in his last outing. However, on Monday, Stock was stellar on the mound. He tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. It was a much-needed performance from the veteran, who earned his first MLB win since 2019. Plus, Stock’s excellent start set the tone for the rest of the series.

Freddy Peralta by Berto Carlo

3 DOWN

ONGOING REGRESSION

Sean Manaea is in a funk right now. The lefty has not been good for a hot minute now, and that continued in Tampa. He gave up five runs on 11 hits over just 5 2/3 innings of work on Tuesday, with three of those runs coming in the sixth inning. Manaea has now allowed 20 earned runs over his last five starts. It is confusing to try and work out what has gone so wrong for Manaea after he seemingly turned things around. Once again, Manaea’s future with the Mets appears to be very much up in the air.

REVENGE GAME

Compounding the Mets’ woes on Tuesday was an old face. Freddy Peralta, who was traded to the Rays earlier in the year, got his own back on his old team. He gave up just one run on three hits over six superb innings, while striking out seven hitters. It was exactly the type of start the Mets wished they had gotten more from Peralta during his time with the team. Overall, the Mets had no answer to their former starter, and it doomed them.

MELTING DOWN

Things were going smoothly for the Mets on Wednesday, with the entire team on cruise control. Owning a 6-0 lead, all was going to plan. However, it wouldn’t be the Mets without some drama. Chris Devenski entered the game and melted down, giving up three earned runs to make it a 6-4 game. Thankfully, the offense took over and put the Rays to the sword. But with that said, Devenski did not cover himself in any kind of glory.

Nick Morabito, the 23-year-old outfielder who made his major league debut back in May against the Nationals, was called back up to join the team once again on Tuesday.

After going hitless in one at-bat on Tuesday, Morabito slotted into Wednesday’s game in the sixth inning, pinch-running after Mark Vientos lined a single into right field.

The Mets would fail to score that inning, but that would change a frame later.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Morabito came up and slashed a double down the left field line, clearing the bases with his first major league hit and giving the Mets a commanding five-run lead.

An inning later, Morabito joined the psychopath club with A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge, making an unbelievable diving catch in left field to rob Victor Mesa Jr. of a hit.

With the game securely in the bag, Morabito came up once more in the ninth, lining a single into center field for his second knock of the game.

“It was great,” Morabito said of the game. “Most importantly, we came out with the win.”

That’s the spirit the fans are looking for. After his initial stint in the majors didn’t result in a hit, Morabito has shown up in his three at-bats since, and Mets fans are hopeful the young speedster can join the ranks of rookies lighting up the Mets outfield.

Morabito has had a strong year in Triple-A, especially since being sent down in May, playing fantastic outfield defense and slashing .254/.355/.388. He also has been an elite baserunner down there, swiping 42 bases this season, something the Mets hope he can replicate at the major league level.

“When you’re thinking about what you want to do in the middle of a baseball game, he gives you a lot of options,” Mets Manager Andy Green said postgame.

With two outs in the seventh inning, he lined a 2-2 pitch down the left-field line for a three-run double that extended the Mets’ lead over Tampa Bay to 9-4. The Mets (63-77) went on to a 10-4 victory Wednesday to take a series from the American League’s best team at Tropicana Field.

Morabito had started his career 0-for-12. The Mets selected the 23-year-old in the second round of the 2022 draft out of Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.

It was the second three-run double of the night for New York. Brett Baty connected in the third with an opposite-field shot that hit near the top of the wall, missing a grand slam by a few feet. That double made it 6-1 and chased starter Griffin Jax (6-10), who was making his first appearance in a month because of an elbow injury.

Justin Hagenman, 29, started and looked good in his season debut, allowing one run on two hits over three innings. He walked one, struck out two and threw 26 of 46 pitches for strikes.

The Rays (83-56) scored three runs in the fourth off Chris Devenski on a Cedric Mullins RBI single and a two-run homer by Richie Palacios.

After Devenski was hit hard, Dedniel Núñez threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, Nate Lavender worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Daniel Duarte recorded four outs. Jonathan Pintaro finished the game with a perfect inning.

The 26-year-old rookie Lavender hasn’t allowed a run in his first 12 2/3 innings. He has struck out 14 and walked three.

New York scored three in the first. Jared Young singled to right with runners at first and second, and the throw home was in time to get Bo Bichette, but catcher Liam Hicks couldn’t handle it. It glanced off his glove, then off Bichette and wound up near the first-base dugout. That allowed Carson Benge to score as well. Marcus Semien followed with an RBI double.

One night after being held to three hits, the Mets tallied three hits in the first. They finished with 14.

Juan Soto hit his 23rd homer, a solo shot, in the eighth.

Stat of the Game

Hagenman became the 39th pitcher and 64th player used by the Mets this year. The 64 players tie the team high set in 2021. The MLB record is 71, set by the Braves last season.

Player of the Game

Let’s give it to the guy who got his first hit and made a diving catch near the left-field line to end the eighth. He also added a single in the ninth.

Morabito became the third Met to get his first MLB hit with the bases loaded, per SNY. The first two were Michael Conforto in 2015 and pitcher Frank Tanana in 1993, who came to the Mets after pitching for 20 years in the American League. Tanana finished with nine career hits, all with the Mets that season.

On Deck

The Mets are off Thursday. They return to Citi Field to host the Giants over the weekend. Nolan McLean (10-8, 3.06 ERA, no earned runs allowed in 17 innings) will be opposed Friday by rookie left-hander Matt Wilkinson (0-2, 4.63 ERA), who will be making his fourth career start. The game is at 7:10 p.m. ET on WPIX.

Teams can expand rosters to 28 on Sept. 1, with a cap of 14 pitchers. Who should get called up and how should the playing time shake out? Here’s a plan.

Position Players

Ronny Mauricio, 25, has nothing left to prove at Triple-A, where he’s hit 16 homers in 53 games this year and posted an .885 OPS. Start him at third base every day. Even if he’s not on the major-league roster next season, a hot month would up his trade value. Bo Bichette can play second, short (when Francisco Lindor gets a day off) or DH.

Outfielder Nick Morabito can play defense and run. The 23-year-old is hitting .254/.355/.384 with 12 homers in 110 games at Syracuse this year. He has stolen 41 bases in 45 attempts. (He went 0-for-11 over five big-league games in May.) Platoon him in left field with Brett Baty and bring him in for late-inning defense. A Morabito-A.J. Ewing–Carson Benge outfield would cover a lot of ground.

Baty, who has had a disappointing year after 2025 inspired hope, should get a lot of run in September, too. Like Mauricio, a good month would raise his trade value. Play him in the outfield and at second to show his versatility. It is OK if Juan Soto‘s next at-bat is in 2027.

Pitchers

Jonah Tong has had a rough year (4.86 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 22 home runs allowed at Syracuse), but he’s been better lately, allowing one earned run or less in five of his last six starts. Tong, 23, or Jack Wenninger (MMO’s Mike Mayer has him as the team’s No. 4 pitching prospect in an updated August ranking) should be in the rotation the rest of the way. I’d go with Tong. Mayer’s top three pitching prospects are Tong, Zac Thornton and Jonathan Santucci.

Wenninger, 24, has pitched to a 4.17 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 101 1/3 innings at Syracuse. He has struck out 104 and walked 59. His upside is not as high as Tong’s.

Santucci, 23, a second-round pick in 2024 from Duke, is another starter to consider. The lefty pitched to a 3.57 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 90 2/3 innings at Double-A Binghamton and was leading the Eastern League in strikeouts with 120 when he was promoted. In five Triple-A Starts, he’s allowed 14 earned runs in 19 innings (6.63 ERA). He can finish the year at Syracuse.

One bullpen arm I would like to see get a shot is right-hander Brian Metoyer, a 29-year-old who has struck out 74 in 47 innings combined between Syracuse and Binghamton. Dylan Ross, who is already on the 40-man roster, has also pitched well as of late, having gone unscored upon in seven of his last eight outings.
