Meet Mets fan Daniel.

Daniel was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when he was 18-years-old.

Ten years later, when he was 28, the medicine he was taking to help with the Crohn’s worked against him, resulting in a rare form of lymphoma.

During these two difficult times, the Mets were there to help.

I spoke with Daniel to learn more about the team’s impact on his hope, courage, strength, and fight.

Tell me your full story.

The two seasons I needed them the most was in 2006 and 2016.

In 2006, I was 18-years-old wrapping up my freshman year of college and I was experiencing very bad stomach pain.

We found out that I had an autoimmune disease called Crohn’s disease.

While I was adjusting to my new life dealing with this disease, it didn’t matter if I had a good day or bad.

I knew at whatever time first pitch was that I would be sitting down and taking my three-hour escape and not worry about real life issues or pains that I would have experienced on a given day.

Unfortunately, 10 years later in June 2016, the medicine that I would take for my Crohn’s backfired.

I was getting those sharp pains back again but this time it was so unbearable that I had a few trips to the hospital.

We learned that I had a rare form of lymphoma.

As you would think, this shook me to the core, finding out at the age of 28 that I had cancer and I would be in the fight of my life.

Thankfully, once again, big life moments came during baseball season.

The Mets helped me every day by keeping my mind busy.

During both of these times, it didn’t matter if I had a great day or a very bad day.

I would have the Mets on TV or radio to make it better.

In 2016, I made it a goal for myself to attend Mike Piazza’s jersey retirement night.

My then fiancée (now wife) and I had made an agreement that if I had a good week of treatments that I would be able to go and not have to sell our seats for the game.

I powered through and got to see my favorite baseball player get the night he deserved.

That night was the moment for me, because going to Citi Field was always a given for me to do.

That was the night I learned that it really is a privilege for me to be able to enjoy a baseball game live because those 10-15 games a year I would attend drastically cut to that one single game for that season.

I will be the first to admit that I broke down and cried a few times that night because I was able to be “normal” again, just if it was for one night, and that is going to Met games for my escape/happy place.

Wow! Thank you for sharing all of that. How are you doing health-wise now?

Health-wise I’m doing well. In November I’ll be in remission for four years.

I am so happy to hear that! It sounds like the Mets gave you the strength to persevere. Would you agree?

Yes, the Mets help me learn not to ever quit or give in no matter how bleak certain situations may be.

That picture from Mr. Met is super sweet. What’s the story behind that?

While I was sick in 2016, I also was getting married to my now wife in November.

My brother and dad rented out a suite at Citi for my bachelor party. Unfortunately, the morning of, I got sick and had to go to the hospital to get treatment.

So I knew my brother and dad put so much hard work planning the event for months I told everyone I invited to go, even though I couldn’t make it.

So I had my own bachelor party in a hospital bed and watched the whole game while healing up.

I FaceTimed everyone and texted everyone as if I was there.

My brother made a sign for everyone to take photos of. One of my friends saw Mr. Met from the distance and ran over to him and had him take a picture of the sign.

Do you have a story you want to share about how the Mets helped you through a difficult time? We want to hear it – DM us on Twitter.

We’re Mets fans. We like to collect Mets memorabilia. So, why not enjoy this off-season and take out the various pennants, bobbleheads, programs, baseball cards and whatever else you collect and share them while reminiscing about how you obtained them and what they mean to you.

Leading off, I’ll share a picture of the Mets pennant I have from my childhood. I was almost born at Shea (Mom and Dad were in the Upper Deck when Mom was 8 1/2 months pregnant and she began experiencing Braxton-Hicks) so from the beginning I was a Mets fan. To this day, that June game and the 23-inning game in 1964 are the only game Dad has ever left before they were over.

The featured picture of the well-worn Mets pennant they bought me before I was born during that amazing season of 1969.

Almost 50-years old, that pennant has survived at least half a dozen moves; a younger brother who liked to take and tear my things; a girlfriend/fiancee/now wife who strangely feels baseball pennants belong in the man cave rather than the living room; two Mets World Series; and a terrorist attack on New York City. The pennant shown pre-dates the Twin Towers and lasted longer than them despite being only blocks from where the Towers fell.

Note the less politically correct posture of Mrs. Met, and how Shea does not have a large electronic scoreboard or the Pepsi Porch. Ahh, the ’60s.

An MMO Fan Shot by Kevin Deutsch

It was the bottom of the ninth when I walked into Keenan’s on Broadway in the Bronx, took a seat at the bar, and, hoping to spur the Mets toward a rally, clutched the Mr. Met charm on my key ring.

The talisman had previously brought the Mets plenty of luck, like during their exhilarating run to the World Series in 2015. I’d squeezed it during every late-inning pitch–every nail biting at-bat–of that postseason.

The charm had come up short before, too, like during Game 7 of the 2006 National League Championship Series, its powers proving no match for Adam Wainwright’s season-ending curve ball.

Still, the unimpressive looking charm–a scuffed up, plastic, thumb-sized version of Mr. Met–had a record well above .500 in games for which I’d summoned its mysterious forces. I was convinced it gave the team an edge no rally cap, or in the Mets’ case, parakeet, could provide.

As I settled into my seat at the bar that afternoon in 2017, squeezing the miniaturized Mr. Met, I felt certain it would get the team’s slumping hitters going. Cespedes. Duda. Reyes. All they needed was a little luck to awaken their dormant bats.

I needed a little luck in my own life, too.

My second nonfiction book, “Pill City,” had come under attack in the press and on social media, the subject of allegations of fabulism. The book was a true story, with many names and details changed to protect the people I’d written about. In the press’ eyes, such changes constituted fabrication. Several reporters worked to discredit my work, but my journalism was solid, my publisher stood by me, and no retractions or corrections were issued as a result of the controversy.

Still, my reputation had been tarnished as a result of the scrutiny and, like the Mets, I needed a turnaround.

I felt my key chain talisman might be the key to unlocking the team’s fortune–and, just maybe. my own. In writing, as in baseball, no superstition is too outlandish to ignore.

That afternoon, though, a win wasn’t in the cards: the opposing team’s closer set our last three hitters down in order. Afterwords, my plastic Mr. Met seemed to stare back at me, his cartoonish eyes saying: “There’s only so much I can do.”

A man seated two chairs down from me at the bar saw me communing with the inanimate object, and suggested I’d be better off transferring my allegiance to the Yankees.

“Root for the Mets and you’ll always be disappointed,” he said. “You’ll never see a Yankee fan talking to his keychain.”

I told the man he was undoubtedly right. It turned out he was a Mets fan, too, and we traded stories about our team for the next hour or so, sipping Budweisers as consolation for the baseball-inflicted pain we’d endured.

Over the next few weeks I watched more games at Keenan’s, and the man and I struck up a friendship. Now in his late 50s, Juan had lived his entire life in the Bronx – a Mets fan in Yankee country – and seemed glad to have found a Bronxite as devoted to the Mets as he was. His suggestion that I defect to the Yankees had been a test, he later told me; a way to gauge my level of commitment to the Amazins.

Later, with the Mets in the midst of a rare winning streak, he asked how I’d procured my Mr. Met charm –and how I first became aware of its powers. A skeptic of the charm when we first met, Juan had since come around to thinking the object was at least partially responsible for our team’s solid play following the All-Star break.

I explained that I’d found the charm a block from Lou Gehrig’s old home on Delafield Avenue, dropped there, perhaps, by one of the baseball fans who make the pilgrimage there to pay respects to the Iron Horse. I would later write about these baseball pilgrims in a piece for the Riverdale Press.

I slid the charm onto my keychain that day, and the following season found myself absentmindedly clutching it during Mets games. It was a nervous habit, but it seemed to have an effect. I felt better when squeezing the charm, and the Mets seemed to play better, too.

“Whatever works,” Juan said.”Maybe it can help with your writing.”

A retired construction company manager, Juan had been encouraging me to keep writing journalism and books in spite of the scrutiny my work was facing. He said he’d once had a bad fall while on a job site in Brooklyn and spent several weeks in the hospital. Doctors weren’t sure he’d ever return to work, but he did so in a matter of months.

“I wouldn’t give up, no matter what anybody told me,” he said. “That’s the key to everything–you can’t quit.”

The same thing held true for the Mets, he explained. As bad as we’d played before the All-Star break, the second half offered the possibility of redemption. And if it took a ratty-looking keychain charm to make redemption seem just a little more likely, then why not keep believing?

“You always gotta believe,” Juan said, echoing Tug McGraw’s eternal optimism.

Last July, Juan was visiting his son in Gwinnett County, Georgia, when he suffered a massive heart attack and, thanks in part to the fact that that same son was an ex-paramedic, survived. Mets games weren’t the same without Juan, but I knew he was catching highlights on his iPhone whenever the doctors allowed. To help hasten his recovery, I mailed him my Mr. Met charm. Amazingly, it seemed to help: the doctors said his tests evidenced a surprisingly quick recovery. They released him well in advance of their initial estimate.

But his luck couldn’t hold out forever.

Earlier this week, Juan died of heart failure in his native Puerto Rico, surrounded by family and friends. His heart had finally given out, but his Mets fandom had endured: a cousin of his, also a baseball junkie, had whispered him the score updates to Mets games during the final week of his life. His cousin admitted to me he had occasionally told him the Mets were ahead when they weren’t, resulting in a fictional six game-winning streak that lifted Juan’s spirits more than any treatment he’d received.

The Mets, of course, are enduring a historically bad run this June—one that Juan, blessedly, knew nothing about. As far as he knew, the team had chosen the final week of his life to go on a torrid run featuring numerous clutch homers—mammoth shots his cousin had conjured out of thin air—and superb pitching.

Before he died, Juan asked that the Mr. Met keychain be placed in a box with other pieces of baseball memorabilia his family would eventually bury with him, including a handful of infield dirt he’d procured in the moments after the final out of the ‘86 World Series.

I miss Juan, and want more than anything to honor him this season. In August, I intend—along with his Mets-loving cousin—to spread some of Juan’s ashes across the outfield at Citi Field. It won’t be an easy feat to pull off. But I know Juan will be watching over us with the Mr. Met keychain at his side, imploring us to believe.

Here’s hoping it can still bring a little luck.

We’ve had some tough times us Mets fans. The road to 2015 has been fraught with heartache. We tell ourselves we’re used to it, we can handle it, but it hasn’t been easy. We take solace in whatever consolation may come our way.

We’ve been more or less able to plan October events without compunction … no excuses for missing your cousin Marlena’s wedding to weird-eyebrow Sal from Bayonne. We haven’t had to worry about keeping track of the standings either, which always seem to look the same unless you turn them upside down. We’ve been able to derive a certain artistic license born from despair — a sad combination of anxiety and dread — we are the Edvard Munch of baseball fans.

Other fans could never understand that feeling where the prospect of being eaten alive by angry bears is preferable to another late-inning melt-down. We all know that 7th inning urge to smear yourself with hamburger and run out into the woods.

I remember a Happy Days episode where the Fonz was trying to show Richie how to pick up girls and he explained that some girls go for the dark sullen look, standing sadly in a corner slowly punching a pinball machine … Mets fans have that look down pat. I’ve derived a hefty portion of inspiration in my own right from all the misery … a self-indulgent malaise animated in many maudlin media. I have a tree stump out back that I hack away at when I’m feeling exasperated … it has begun to resemble a cross between Mr. Met and Oogie Boogie. My sumi-e ink drawings take on a ghastly appearance during losing streaks … I’ve even managed to channel an unhealthy dose of existential angst into my snide posts about our glorious manager, our vaunted bullpen, and our “powerhouse” offense … It’s been a good run from a creative standpoint.

Now Matt Harvey comes sauntering over the prairie like Shane offering to help me remove my stump, and suddenly my cynical jokes seem to miss their mark. When I comment on how Terry Collins’ hamster wheel has come off its hinges again it just doesn’t have the same bite. This is wonderful news of course. I’d gladly give up my miserable craft for a few wins. No one cares about sumi anyway … my bamboo brush keeps losing its horsehairs. Maybe I’ll spend my sumi-brush money on a knock-off deGrom jersey from Korea (no one would know!). Yes, self-deprecation isn’t the cakewalk it used to be … even my Mets cap has somehow been finding it’s way to the top of my head without recompense.

I was talking baseball with a couple of Twins fans the other day who were going on about Ervin Santana and I mentioned how the Mets also lost Jennry Mejia to this same stanozolol (is it stanozolol or stanozo-lol? Because if it’s stanozo-lol I DON’T GET IT!). By the way it seems oddly disquieting that Edvard (of Edvard Munch from earlier) and Ervin (of Ervin Santana) both have “v’s” in their first names where you’d normally expect a “w” … I know, mind blowing. Anyway, when I mentioned how losing Mejia was also “a real bummer” they looked at me and said “yeah but the Mets have the depth to weather it and still be competitive but for the Twins it changes everything.” I was surprised … I was half expecting some variation of “yeah but the Mets suck anyway,” but NO! Apparently this may no longer be true. I was flabbergasted, I realized I had no idea how to behave in a world where the Mets did not suck … I had to pinch myself.

The interesting thing about all this is how the positive synergy may actually be having an impact on the team. I am of course talking about that elusive 10th player, the fans.

NY Mets fans are a strange animal. They are like a beast that is let loose into the wild every 20 or 30 years, and when they are released they go totally freaking berserk like some sort of wolf-hybrid bereft of natural enemies in Yellowstone … throwing beer at poor unsuspecting Grady Sizemore. What would possess an otherwise normal person to do that (besides beer of course)? I’ll tell you what … years and years of frustration. It’s like these people who try to tame tigers and lions and the creatures are all friendly and cuddly until of course the day of the mauling … You can’t domesticate a frustrated Mets fan who is finally experiencing winning no matter how many times you try to disorient them by moving the fences or with ill-advised Yankee-esque roll calls (whose brilliant idea was that “BTW”?).

The positive side of this is that all of a sudden the opposition is looking over their shoulders a little more, just like in 1969 and in 1986. Like the fans are going to start parachuting in or something. You can almost see the opposition wondering if those flimsy blue barriers can really keep the fans from rushing onto the field should something particularly unpalatable occur … I swear the Phillies had this “maybe we should just let them win” look on their faces on opening day, which is as it should be — this is New York for crying out loud.

Sandy Alderson and the Mets’ triumvirate of triangulation have been conducting all manner of statistical marauding trying to figure out why recent Mets incarnations have done so poorly at home … I can tell you why as easily as I might flick a sabermetric booger at the guy in the Marlins jersey standing in front of me at the supermarket check-out counter. Besides the lack of contact hitters in a very big pitcher’s park, it’s because for the last 6 seasons our tenth player has been on strike.

Yes my Mets peeps … it is an excellent thing. Not only are there signs that the team may actually be able to compete, there are palpable indicators that our 10th player (who unlike other more docile 10th players around the league is a particularly ferocious species) may be back from the grave. Now you do need a certain amount of wins to re-animate a corpse such as it is — wins are like lightning bolts for this Fan-kenstein’s monster — returning to munch on the erstwhile smug and confident brains of our opposition. Interestingly enough it appears the Mets have responded with some spunk of their own, plunking batters, getting in people’s faces, getting bench warnings … which of course only riles up the maniacal faithful even more. But the wins have to keep coming. Losses are like Darryl Dixon crossbow arrows to the brain of this snarling ghoul.

Still, I will apologize in advance if my jokes don’t quite have the same zing they used to, art suffers when misery wanes as they say … a small price to pay for a winning season.

The Mets have been awarded the 2013 All-Star Game announced MLB commissioner Bud Selig today at a press conference at City Hall. In addition to Selig, Mayor Bloomberg, Fred Wilpon and of course Mr. Met were on hand for the announcement.

“As we celebrate the franchise’s golden anniversary this year, I am pleased to award the 2013 All-Star Game to the New York Mets and their loyal fans. We are delighted to bring the Midsummer Classic to Citi Field, a wonderful ballpark that has carried on the remarkable National League tradition in New York City. The Mets will be superb hosts to next summer’s greatest sporting event.”
-Bud Selig today announcing Mets 2013 All-Star hosts.

This will mark the second time in franchise history that the New York Mets will host an All-Star Game, the last time being 1964 during Shea Stadium’s inaugural season. This marks the ninth time that the All-Star Game will be played in New York City, more than any other city. Baseball’s 84th All-Star Game will take place at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 13th, 2013.

Original Post 5/7 at 1:38pm:

Ken Davidoff of the New York Post says to expect an official announcement shortly that the Mets will host the 2013 All Star Game at Citi Field.

Expect an official announcement shortly that the Mets will host the 2013 MLB All-Star Game. It’s been locked in for over five years.

This has been expected for quite sometime but the timing of an official announcement has been a long time coming most likely because MLB wanted to be sure the Wilpons and their financial problems were settled and behind them.

In 2009, Kelly created some great mock-up logos/patches for the 2013 All Star Game and posted them on MMO. We even took a vote to see which one our readers preferred the most.

Here are the designs that you voted on…

Each design tells a story about the rich history and imagery of our team and our wonderful city.

*Click on each design to enlarge and see the graphic in high resolution.*

1. Mets All Star Skyline – The first entry is representative of the classic Mets logo with such aspects as the skyline and bridge and of course the shape.

Ranked #1 with 895 votes.

2. Big Apple All Stars – The Home Run Apple is one of the most popular and familiar Mets symbols. Many Mets fans remember campaigning to save the apple when the team moved from the beloved Shea Stadium to the new Citi Field.

Ranked #4 with 518 votes.

3. All Stars Across the Unisphere – Arguably Queens’ most iconic symbol, the Unisphere is located in Flushing Meadow Park and not far from the home of the Mets.

Ranked #3 with 567 votes.

4. Mr. Met Is An All Star – A happy Mr. Met sits atop this All Star logo which is in the shape of home plate.

Ranked #2 with 725 votes.

Amazing job by Kelly on these and I’d wager good money that whatever the team decides to go with, their patch probably won’t be nearly as good as any of these.

The only time the Mets have ever hosted “The Mid-Summer Classic” was in 1964, the season Shea Stadium opened. The nearly 50-year drought is the longest a major league franchise has ever gone without hosting the game, according to SI.com.
