Nimmo and Lowrie both made progress on their rehab assignments, with Lowrie playing seven innings at second base. Nimmo is nearly ready and could be activated any day now, now that the rosters will be expanding. Lowrie is a bit further away, but for now is still looking on track to return sometime in September.

Espinosa homered, Colton Plaia doubled home a run, and Lowrie drove in a run of his own with a groundout, but the Mets fell short, 5-3.

RHP Chris Flexen (L, 5-3, 4.46 ERA): 1.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 K

RHP Eric Hanhold (3-3, 4.47 ERA): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K

It was a rough end to the season for Flexen, who posted an 8.10 ERA in five August outings (four starts), allowing a .373 average. He posted a 4.46 ERA with Syracuse overall this season, allowing a .297 average being used as both a starter and reliever. His strikeouts were up though, with 92 in 78.2 innings, as he gained some velocity out of the bullpen. In his fourth appearance since joining the organization, Rumbelow had his shakiest outing yet.

Binghamton (66-72) 4, Hartford (72-65) 1 Box Score

Carpio has gone 3-for-hist-last-5 after going 1-for-14. Vasquez is 9-for-33 with four walks in 10 games since joining Binghamton, but with only one extra base hit. Thompson had a really bad August and has endured a tough season overall as he’s struggled to rebound from injury.

RHP Zach Lee (W, 5-1, 2.09 ERA): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K

The former top prospect Lee’s season has been flipped around since joining Binghamton. He posted a 2.09 ERA with a .208 opponents batting average in eight starts with the Rumble Ponies after struggling to the tune of a 6.99 ERA and .345 opponents batting average with Syracuse. Torres, still working to regain full strength after missing time due to injury, has allowed at least one run in four consecutive appearances.

Augusta (75-61) 5, Columbia (52-82) 4 Box Score

Hits have been hard to come by for Newton, he finished off the month of August with two singles. Vientos ended the month with a dry spell, but was still solid through July and August. Avant hit his third career home run and second of the season in the ninth inning, a two-run shot, but the Fireflies’ comeback attempt fell short as they lost 5-4.

RHP Jose Butto (L, 4-10, 3.62 ERA): 2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, K

Limiting Butto to two innings a start had been a recent theme for the righty, who allowed more than one run for the first time since July 25.

Brooklyn (41-32) 11, Staten Island (40-34) 2 Box Score

Cano played his first game with Brooklyn as he nears a relatively quick return to the Mets. He recorded two hits including a double, and played seven innings at second base. According to Josh Finkelstein of MMO, Cano said that he plans to return to the Mets lineup on Tuesday after playing one more game for the Cyclones on Monday.

The Cyclones blew out the Yankees, propelled by a seven-run seventh inning. Genord capped a rough month with a big day, smashing two extra base hits including his ninth home run of the year.

Mets’ prized third-round pick Allan made his Brooklyn debut, allowing a run in each inning he pitched while striking out three and walking one. Between GCL and Brooklyn, he now has a 2.61 ERA with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 10.1 innings. Santos also made his Brooklyn debut, picking up where he left off with Kingsport with a scoreless inning. He has allowed just a .198 opponents average while striking out 30 in 23 innings this year.

Alcantara was unable to extend his hitting streak to six games but still had a huge impact as he scored the first run of the game with a steal of home in the first inning. Taijeron did not start the game as he entered as part of a double switch with Daniel Zamora in the bottom of the sixth inning. In his first at-bat of the game, Taijeron drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single thru the left side of the infield to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Brandon Nimmo started in center-field for the second straight game and played four innings in the field before being removed from the game.

Gagnon flirted with danger all game but was able to wiggle out of RISP opportunities in almost every inning he pitched, including a bases loaded, one out jam in the fifth inning. Amazingly, he would end up allowing only one run, despite ten base-runners reaching.

Wilson really struggled with his command yesterday issuing three walks on the day, seven hits (including four extra base hits), and two HBP resulting in a run scoring in every inning he pitched. Despite the short outing by Wilson, the Rumble Ponies bullpen would not be taxed as Villines saved the day with his longest performance of the season. His three shut-out innings allowed the team to take the lead and put him in a position to earn his second win of the season but Torres could not hold the lead. After a tossing a perfect eighth inning, Torres allowed the tying run to score in the ninth inning on a solo home run and a game winning run via a squeeze bunt in the tenth.

Two big rallies in the sixth and ninth innings helped the Fireflies come back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the second best team in the South Atlantic League. Mauricio kicked off the first rally with a two out single to right field which was followed up by singles from both Jose Miguel Medina and Chambers (scoring Mauricio).
The Columbus Clippers jumped all over Zach Lee right from the start of the game scoring five runs in the first inning on six singles and a sacrifice fly. After that, Lee was solid the next four innings allowing only two hits while striking out five, however, he would get into some trouble in the sixth inning after allowing a single and double to open the frame.

Taylor would enter the game at this point but he allowed both inherited runners to score and allowed an earned run of his own. With the game well out of hand, Conlon would attempt to save the bullpen and chew up some innings but he needed 56 pitches to get through two plus innings of work. He would need Villines to finish things off after back to back walks and an error by Dilson Herrera allowed a run to score and put runners on first and second.

There was no offense in this game for the Rumble Ponies as they only managed two hits the entire night. This game also saw Patrick Mazeika’s 15 game hitting streak come to an end.

The Trenton Thunder jumped on Mazza immediately scoring two runs on four straight hits in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. They would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded single but the rally would stop there as Patrick Mazeika caught the batter trying to advance to second base on the throw home. Zanghi would enter the game in the sixth inning and, while he struggled with his command, he was able to extend his scoreless innings streak to 10.2 IP.

Woods-Richarson’s recent struggles continued last night as he allowed five earned runs to score for the fourth straight start in a row. He struggled with the command of his fastball for most of the game though it did reach 94 mph. Tylor Megill was a bright spot for the Fireflies bullpen as the recently promoted right hander struck out five of the nine batters he faced giving him eight in four innings pitched so far since his call-up on May 13th.

Pobereyko continues to show that he’s ready for the jump to (AAA) as he completed his fourth straight scoreless playoff appearance of the Round Robin stage. He was brought into the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and generated weak contact from all three players he faced. Wilkin Castillo led off the inning with a pop out to second base followed by ground outs up the middle by both Jimmy Paredes and Cesar Puello.

Nido’s defensive prowess was on full display today for the Indios de Mayaguez as he made excellent plays on a pair of inning ending double plays. In the top of the first inning with the bases loaded and only one out, Jan Hernandez hit a soft grounder back to the pitcher who toss it to Nido for the force out at home. Nido stretched to get the out, stepped up, and fired a rocket to first base to get the out at first base as well to end the inning. After scoring two runs in the seventh inning, Nido would be needed again as the Cangrejeros would load the bases up again with only one out. A sacrifice fly attempt to center field by A.J. Gimenez would be foiled as Jay Gonzalez threw a strike from center field to Nido who applied a quick stretch tag to get the out at home as well.

Joshua Torres continued his recent stretch of strong performances as he converted his fourth save in four straight appearances giving him a league leading total of eleven for the season.

After only getting four innings of work on Wednesday, Lagares was surprisingly back in the line-up for the third day in a row. In the bottom of the second inning, Lagares turned on a first pitch fastball sending it to deep center field for what looked like a home run. After replay review though, it was determined that the ball actually bounced off the top portion of the yellow line and bounced back into play thus limiting Lagares to a triple. He would eventually score two pitches later on an RBI single by Guillermo Heredia.

Crismatt had his change-up dancing in this game but poor defensive play by the Tigres bit him once again. In the first inning, a throwing error allowed Victor Robles to reach base followed by single Guillermo Heredia. Crismatt would get the next batter to strike out but a passed ball allowed both runners to advance to second and third and to subsequently score on a two RBI single by Wilin Rosario.

From there, Crismatt was superb as he struck out six of the next nine batters he faced, getting the other three batters to ground out. Despite a 7-2 lead for the Tigres, Crismatt would not stick around long enough to qualify for the win as he got himself into trouble in the fifth inning with runners on first and second. With one out and Robles at the plate again, Crismatt fell behind in the count and threw a fastball in the outer half of the zone that Robles took the other way for an RBI single with the runner on first advancing to third base. He would get the second out but could not get the final one as Ronny Rodriguez would cut the lead down to 7-4 with an RBI single of his own to end Crismatt’s day.

Making his first start since being re-activated from his shin injury, Jenrry Mejia was superb on the mound tossing four innings of work and only allowing one hit, a weak flare over the shortstop, to Junior Lake in the fourth inning. Mejia seems to be gaining some confidence down in the LIDOM as he was much “looser” with his delivery and with his demeanor on the mound. At one point, he was even spotted dancing a bit when he didn’t get a strike on a close call on the corner of the zone. Mejia used his slider quite a bit in this game and it was very effective generating three of the four strikeouts on the pitch.

With the Toros leading 2-0, Tim Peterson was called on to pitch the eighth inning. Unfortunately, for the first time in over a month, he was not sharp. He allowed line-drive singles up the middle to two of the first three batters he faced putting runners on first and second with one out for San Diego’s top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. After falling behind him in the count 2-0, Peterson left a fastball out over the plate and Tatis crushed it over the left field wall for a three run home run to blow the save situation and give the Estrellas the 3-2 lead. Peterson would finish the inning and actually get himself the win thanks to a two run double by Abraham Almonte in the bottom half of the inning to give the Toros the lead back and the win.

Torres nailed down his second save in as many opportunities, but, his grip on the job may be in trouble as he struggled once again to put batters away in the ninth. In addition, right hander Colby Blueberg nailed down a clean save in the first game of the doubleheader.
