Triple-A

The Syracuse Mets split their series with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, each team winning three games. The split puts Syracuse at 25-31 in the second half of the season and 71-59 overall.

• Luisangel Acuña paced the team with 10 hits in the six games, including a triple and a home run. He drove in six runs and stole four bases. Acuña didn’t get tabbed for a September call-up this year as the Mets want him to play every day, and he had a fantastic week to increase his Triple-A OPS to .671.
• Carlos Cortes also looked really good, recording seven hits including three doubles and a home run. The 27-year-old outfielder owns a .797 OPS in Syracuse this season.
• Yolmer Sánchez was on base a ton, going 8-for-19 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and four walks. Sánchez owns a .701 OPS for the Mets this year.

Brandon Sproat made two starts this week. Though his first start (4.2 IP, 4 ER) was nothing to write home about, Sproat looked more like himself in his second start of the week when he went 5.1 scoreless innings and struck out six. Between the two starts, he allowed four runs in 10 innings and struck out 11. He owns a measly 6.75 ERA in five starts with Syracuse, but the Top 100 prospect may finally be settling in at Triple-A.

Mike Vasil also continued his upward trajectory for the Mets, allowing two earned runs in six innings in his latest showing. Vasil owns just a 5.54 ERA on the year, but he’s gone at least six innings in five of his last six starts and he owns a better, but not great, 4.48 ERA in his last 13 games.

Out of the bullpen, several relievers had fantastic weeks. Max Kranick, who has a 3.27 ERA, struck out five in 3 2/3 perfect innings, while Justin Jarvis and Shintaro Fujinami each went three scoreless. Jarvis owns a 5.71 ERA in Syracuse and a 4.20 ERA overall, while Fujinami owns a 6.29 ERA in Triple-A but has a 1.50 ERA with 14 strikeouts in his last eight outings.

Additionally, Eric Orze, who owns a 3.23 ERA in Syracuse, struck out four in two perfect innings, while Alex Young struck out two in two perfect innings, and Matt Gage also threw two scoreless innings. Young owns a 4.91 ERA in Syracuse but has been much better in the majors this year, while Gage owns a 4.85 ERA in Syracuse.

Double-A

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies struggled in their series against the Hartford Yard Goats, dropping five out of six games. Binghamton won a one-run game in the series opener but dropped the final five games. The Rumble Ponies are now 28-28 in the second half of the season and 63-60 overall.

Only three Binghamton offensive players really showed up this week. Among them was top prospect Ryan Clifford, who led the team with eight hits including two doubles and a home run. With his performance, Clifford raised his Double-A OPS back up to .815.

Matt Rudick also stood out in this series, going 7-for-19 with two home runs and three walks. Rudick has been solid all year for the Rumble Ponies, owning a .733 OPS.

Wyatt Young was the final standout offensive performer, going 6-for-17 with a double, four walks, and a stolen base. The 24-year-old increased his season OPS to .756 and earned a promotion to Triple-A where he spent part of the 2023 season.

Jordan Geber made two solid starts for the Rumble Ponies, allowing two runs in each start. In total, he allowed four runs across 11 innings and struck out six. Geber has impressed across three levels this year, earning a 3.32 ERA on the year including a 3.42 ERA in 15 appearances with Binghamton.

Jonathan Pintaro continued his impressive season (which started in independent ball), allowing one earned run and striking out five across 5 2/3 innings in his latest start. Pintaro has truly come out of nowhere for the Mets this year, as he owns a 2.69 ERA in 14 appearances in the Mets organization, including a 2.96 ERA in five starts in Binghamton.

Joshua Cornielly, Cam Robinson, and Junior Santos were Binghamton’s standout relievers, with each tossing at least three scoreless innings. Cornielly has an impressive 0.87 ERA in six appearances with Binghamton, while Robinson owns a 3.57 ERA and Santos owns a 5.06 ERA in Double-A.

The Brooklyn Cyclones won their series against the Winston-Salem Dash, winning four games to Winston-Salem’s two. Brooklyn’s series win puts them at 28-32 in the second half of the season and 61-65 overall.

Jefrey De Los Santos had a fantastic week, leading the team in both batting and slugging. De Los Santos went 6-for-18 with a double, a triple, and a home run in addition to two walks. The 21-year-old has struggled this year, though, owning a .601 OPS as the season comes to a close.

D’Andre Smith also had a really good week, leading the team with eight hits. Smith recorded two doubles, two walks, and three stolen bases. He raised his season OPS in 33 games to .671, though he has an .843 OPS in his last 22 games.

Nick Morabito continued to demonstrate his impressive bat and speed with seven hits including a home run and four steals this week. Morabito owns a .730 OPS with Brooklyn this year and continues to lead the Mets minor leagues in batting and in stolen bases.

Omar De Los Santos also showed off his bat and his speed this week, going 6-for-19 with a double and a triple in addition to two steals. The speedster owns a .626 OPS on the year, though he’s been on fire for a while with a .252/.336/.504/.840 slash in his last 36 games. He also trails just Nick Morabito for the Mets organization stolen base lead with 41 on the year.

Felipe De La Cruz made two starts this week and looked really good in both. In total, he allowed just one run in eight innings while striking out six. De La Cruz is just 3-8 with a 4.28 ERA in 24 games for the Cyclones this year, though he has a 3.48 ERA in his last seven starts.

Zach Thornton and Jack Wenninger also had good starts, with Thornton striking out four in five scoreless innings and Wenninger striking out five and allowing one earned run in 4 1/3 innings. Thornton had a rough start to the year in St. Lucie, but he owns a 3.72 ERA in five games in Brooklyn, and it’s a similar story for Wenninger who has a 3.38 ERA in nine appearances in Brooklyn.

Out of the bullpen, Luis Moreno tossed four scoreless innings, striking out five in the process. Moreno owns a 3.91 ERA in 10 appearances with Brooklyn. Layonel Ovalles also looked phenomenal, striking out four in three perfect innings for his first two appearances in High-A. He also struggled mightily with St. Lucie this year but has had a great start for Brooklyn.

Ryan Ammons also continued his fantastic year, striking out six and allowing a run in 3 1/3 innings. Like Thornton, Wenninger, and Ovalles, Ammons had trouble in St. Lucie to begin the year, but he has a 1.47 ERA in 13 appearances with the Cyclones.

The St. Lucie Mets split their final home series of the season, taking three games against the Jupiter Hammerheads. It was a good offensive series for the Mets, who scored 31 runs in six games, though the team allowed 29 runs too. The Mets are now 21-37 in the second half of the season and 43-81 overall.

It was the week of the 2024 draft class, as several of the newest Mets had fantastic weeks offensively.

• First-round pick Carson Benge led the group in hits, home runs, and RBIs, going 8-for-22 with a double, his first two pro home runs, and seven RBIs. In his first 11 pro games, Benge owns an .894 OPS.
• Fourth-round pick Eli Serrano III had the second-most hits with seven, going 7-for-19 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. The NC State product also walked three times and stole a base. Serrano owns a .737 OPS in his first 14 pro games.
• Eleventh-round pick Nick Roselli out of Binghamton University had an extremely impressive week, going 6-for-17 with his first pro home run, five walks opposed to just two strikeouts, and two steals. Roselli has played solely second base to start his career, and he owns a .931 OPS in his first 14 pro games.
• Sixth-round pick Corey Collins only played in three games going 3-for-10, but like Benge and Roselli, he also hit his first pro home run after launching 20 in his final year at the University of Georgia. The power-hitting first baseman has played in just five games with St. Lucie thus far, but he owns a .912 OPS.

It’s also worth mentioning that Marco Vargas, who has not been on the map much this year due to poor play and injury, went 3-for-8 with a double in four games. The most notable part of his week, however, was that he walked nine times, stole three bases, and scored six runs in just the four games he played in. The 19-year-old owns just a .632 OPS this year, but he’s walked at least once in seven straight games and at least twice in five straight. He’s also scored at least one run in six of his last seven games.

Edgar Moreta pitched extremely well in two appearances, one of which was a start and one which came in relief. Moreta allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in six innings for his start and then struck out four over three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. In total, he struck out 11 and allowed two runs in nine innings. The soon-to-be 21-year-old owns a 5.25 ERA in 12 appearances with St. Lucie.

Joel Díaz also had a quality start, striking out four and allowing two earned runs in six innings pitched. Díaz owns a 4.95 ERA in 16 Low-A appearances but he has a 3.80 ERA in his last five appearances.

Kyle Crick made two rehab appearances for the Mets and struck out three over three scoreless innings. Crick has been on the mend all season after initially being a major league bullpen option, and he’s allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings in four rehab appearances with Low-A St. Lucie. Crick owns a career major league ERA of 3.56 across parts of six seasons with three teams.

Players of the Week

Offense – Carson Benge, OF St. Lucie

There were great offensive performances across the board this week, including from top prospects Ryan Clifford and Luisangel Acuña, as well as from Benge’s fellow 2024 draftees. Benge entered the series against Jupiter with just a .675 OPS in his first 28 plate appearances of the year, but he broke out in a big way with three multi-hit games and his first home runs as a Met, both of which went to the opposite field.

The Mets have high hopes for the first rounder, who is currently MMO’s No. 6 ranked prospect, and he’s definitely shown promise in his first foray into pro ball.

Pitching – Edgar Moreta, P St. Lucie

Brandon Sproat, Mike Vasil, Zach Thornton, Felipe De La Cruz and several relievers pitched outstandingly this past week, and any could be deserving of this recognition. However, Edgar Moreta, who is not a highly touted prospect by any means, earns the pitcher of the week honors after striking out 11 and allowing just two runs in nine innings. Moreta pitched well in rookie ball to start the year but has struggled in Low-A. His latest two outings, however, were two of his best of the year.

Upcoming Schedule – September 2-8

• Triple-A Syracuse: vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
• Double-A Binghamton: vs. Somerset
• High-A Brooklyn: vs. Wilmington (last series of the regular season)
• Low-A St. Lucie: @ Clearwater (last series of the regular season)

• DH Pablo Reyes: 1-for-5, R, HR (11), RBI, K (.867 OPS)
• SS Luisangel Acuña: 3-for-5, 3B, RBI, SB (36) (.676 OPS)

Syracuse had some big-time offense performances on Saturday, but the four-run first inning for the IronPigs was too deep of a hole to climb out of, falling 8-4.

It was announced Saturday night that Pablo Reyes would be the September position player call-up.

• RHP Dom Hamel (6.77 ERA) 3.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR allowed (43 of 76 pitches for strikes)

• RHP Shintaro Fujinami (6.29 ERA) 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Fujinami has found a groove in August for the Syracuse bullpen. Boasting a 1.80 ERA and K:BB ratio of 14:4. Fujinami has been dialed into the strike zone, leaning heavily on his upper 90’s fastball. Specifically, 15 of his 20 pitches were four-seamers on Saturday.

• LF Alex Ramirez 3-for-5, 2 R, RBI (.600 OPS)
• C Drake Osborn 3-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB (.628 OPS)

After posting two lackluster offense games in a row, the Ponies offense righted the ship with a six-run effort against the Yard Goats despite losing the game in extra innings. Ryan Clifford picked up his second four-hit game of the season, while the struggling Alex Ramirez brought his OPS back up to .600.

• RHP Nolan McLean (4.71 ERA) 3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K (45 of 77 pitches for strikes)
• RHP Cam Robinson (3.57 ERA) 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

• RHP TJ Shook (1.72 ERA) 2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 5 K

McLean’s final start of August was his least successful, walking four batters and striking out only two. Before his Saturday start, McLean had his best month since turning to full-time pitching, and he’ll need to limit his walks to attain that level of play again.

• SS Boston Baro 1-for-5, RBI (.230 OPS)
• 1B Ronald Hernandez 1-for-4, RBI, 2 K (.410 OPS)

Nick Morabito continues to be an on-base machine. With his two hits and a stolen base on Saturday, he now leads the Mets farm system in hits and stolen bases (132 and 58, respectively). His homer on Saturday was only his fourth for the season.

• RHP Jack Wenninger (3.38 ERA) 4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 5 K (49 of 82 pitches for strikes)
• RHP Justin Lawson (2.58 ERA) 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

In five August starts (16 1/3 innings pitched), Wenninger has a 3.31 ERA, struck out 27 batters and walked only eight. The 2023 sixth-round selection has been a sleeper within the Mets farm system, posting a K/9 of 9.88 and BB/9 of 3.62 on the season.

St. Lucie rolled out a lineup with six 2024 draftees, including fifth-round pick Trey Snyder’s professional debut. Snyder became the first Mets high school draft pick to reach Low-A St. Lucie the same year he was drafted.

In the loss, Collins and Roselli launched their first professional home runs, and the Mets took a 9-2 lead in the fifth inning. 2024 has been a lost season for Marco Vargas, but the 19-year-old has stayed healthy in August and produced. He has collected 13 walks in the last seven games.

• RHP Christian Rodriguez (2.25 ERA) 4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K (43 of 77 pitches for strikes)
• RHP Estarlin Escalante (3.00 ERA) 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

The exit velocities and instant success are encouraging signs for Benge, who the Mets selected 19th overall this July.

Benge was touted as a contact bat with “great raw power” by area scout Trey Cobb, and showcased both skills on Saturday afternoon. Benge slashed 335/.444/.665 with 24 homers in 61 games as a junior at Oklahoma State University.

Another bat that showcased their bat in Saturday’s matchup was first baseman Corey Collins. The University of Georgia product drove in a run with a baseknock, displaying his bat-to-ball skills after slashing .354/.574/.772/1.346 in the Southeastern Conference.

The Bridge League is designed for recent Major League Baseball draft picks a taste in the pros. The Mets faced the Cardinals on Saturday, featuring a lineup of Trey Snyder, Eli Serrano III, Nick Roselli, and other 2024 draft picks. Benge batted leadoff and Collins fifth.

On top of an exciting Subway Series victory, the Mets received more good news regarding their recovering ace.

Prior to Tuesday’s game, Kodai Senga said, through his interpreter, “I feel 100% ready, and I’m excited to get back out there.”

Senga threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and is scheduled to make his season debut against the Atlanta Braves on Friday at City Field.

After finishing second in the NL Rookie of the Year race last year, Senga was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain in spring training that has kept him sidelined.

Sean Manaea and Gerrit Cole will face off in another Subway Series matchup. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.

The Mets escaped with a 3-2 victory last night.

Rookie pitcher Christian Scott was placed on the injured list with a UCL sprain.

The Mets added outfield depth, signing veteran Jackie Bradley Jr. to a minor league contract.

Corey Collins, the Mets sixth-round selection, signed for $275,00, nearly $90,000 below slot value.

Sean Reid-Foley will start a rehab assignment with High-A Brooklyn on Friday.

3 to the Dohm

The Mets started Day 2 by adding Mississippi State right-hander Nate Dohm in Round 3 (slot value $934,000). Dohm is an intriguing add because of his ability to light up the radar gun and throw four pitches for strikes since transferring to Mississippi State in 2023. (He started his collegiate career at Ball State.)

Here is the latest on Dohm from MLB Pipeline:

“A healthy Dohm carves up hitters with a fastball that averages 94 mph and touches 97 with explosive carry up in the strike zone. He can miss bats with both of his breaking balls, getting a lot of empty swings with his mid-80s slider and a ton of chases with his deeper 79-82 mph curveball. He lacks feel for a too-firm changeup in the upper 80s, though it flashes some promising fade.”

This past year, Dohm went 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA in eight games (six starts). He showed excellent command as he had just four walks in 29.1 innings of work (37 strikeouts). The question with Dohm is going to be his health. He had a forearm strain back in April, which is the second one he has had in his collegiate career.

Dohm did go from the bullpen to the rotation to begin the 2024 season, so it will be interesting to see what role the Mets have for him. With his ability to miss bats, he could be a mid-rotation starter or a multi-inning reliever that have become very valuable in today’s game.

Power Potential

The Mets went for their second outfielder of the class in Round 4 when they took a left-handed bat in Eli Serrano III out of NC State ($656,400). Serrano III will have a familiar face in the Mets organization as he was teammates with current Binghamton Rumble Pony Ryan Clifford in high school.

Back in January, Prospects Live talked about Serrano’s ability to show good plate discipline. He drew 60 walks at NC State over the last two years (114 games).

“He runs a solid contact rate from the left side and draws a plentiful amount of walks, showcasing solid feel to spray the ball to all fields,” Prospects Live said. “His power potential is outrageous with his potent bat speed and highly projectable frame, mashing the ball up the middle and to the pull-side. ”

This year, Serrano made the switch from first base to the outfield for the Wolfpack on their way to a berth in the College World Series. He comes from a professional baseball family—his father Sammy was drafted in the second round by the San Francisco Giants in 1998.

The Lone Prep Pick

New York’s lone prep pick of the first two days came in the fifth round when they took shortstop Trey Snyder, a right-handed hitter from Liberty North High School in Missouri. Snyder is committed to Tennessee at the moment. According to Perfect Game Baseball, Snyder has a good swing and he is a player that has a lot of upside as he continues to develop.

“Big and strong athletic build. Right-handed hitter, has a simple load and trigger and an easy rhythm to his swing, sinks into his back hip well, effortless swing mechanics that result in big bat speed, more a line drive swing plane at present with big bat speed and consistent 100+ exit velos, high ceiling offensive talent.”

Snyder had a strong 2024 season, which led him to being named the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in Missouri. As Prep Baseball Report points out, he ended up performing very well against some of the top competition in the state. If he decides to go to the Mets, it will be fun to watch his offense develop if he is hitting the ball this well at just 18 years old.

Given his commitment to Tennessee, the Mets will likely have to far exceed his slot value of $476,200 to get him to sign.

HBP Anyone?

When people talked about the Georgia baseball program in 2024, a lot of talk was around Charlie Condon, who ended up going 3rd overall to the Colorado Rockies. The Mets grabbed his teammate in Round 6 by taking left-handed hitting first baseman Corey Collins ($363,100 slot value).

In a tough SEC conference, Collins was one of the best hitters in the country at getting on-base (.574 on-base percentage in 52 games). He had a slash line of .345/.574/.772 with 20 home runs, 58 RBIs, and a 1.346 OPS. Even though he just started learning first base this year, his power is the story.

“Collins still focuses almost exclusively on launching balls to his pull side, but his shorter stroke has enabled him to make more consistent hard contact and get the most out of his plus raw power. … He’s also no longer helpless against breaking balls and changeups. He works deep counts and excels at getting on base via walks and being hit by pitches.” (MLB Pipeline).

Back in March, Collins showed off the power when he hit three home runs in Georgia’s 18-6 win over Wofford. On the afternoon, he went 4-for-5 and drove in eight runs.

The Mets should be able to save some slot money on Collins given he’s a fourth-year senior. He was also hit by 28 pitches this year!!!

Righties on Righties

For the final four picks of Day 2, the Mets stayed exclusively with right-handed pitching to build up some of their depth. In Round 7, New York selected Will Watson out of USC ($283,800 slot value). Watson was selected in the 20th Round by the Seattle Mariners in 2023 when he was at San Joaquin Delta College in California, but he elected to go to USC.

With the Trojans, Watson went 5-2 with a 3.93 ERA in 16 games (nine starts). He had 46 strikeouts to 27 walks over 50.1 innings of work. One of his better games of the season came in the Pac-12 Tournament against Oregon when he had seven strikeouts and allowed just one run over six innings of work. As Taylor Blake Ward pointed out on X, his arsenal of pitches may make him more suited for a reliever role down the road.

Mets 7-203: Will Watson, RHP, USC — smaller/athletic swing arm, mid 90s FB/SK, sweepy SL/hard CV blend, firm active CH flashes, fringe/avg control w/ mostly relief projection w/ athletic markers to chance starter dev

— Taylor Blake Ward (@TaylorBlakeWard) July 15, 2024

If you like velocity, then the Mets’ eighth-round pick ($226,000) might be the player you watch. Ryan Lambert had just one year at the University of Oklahoma (transferred from Missouri State), but he was able to get the fastball velocity up to 102 miles per hour along with a power cutter and a curveball.

Lambert did battle some command issues in college (12 walks in 23 games). With that being said, in a small sample size in the MLB Draft League this summer, he had no walks to go with 10 strikeouts in 6 innings of work.

In Round 9, the Mets went with Houston right-hander Jaxon Jelkin ($196,700 slot value). Like Watson, Jelkin was drafted in 2023 (14th Round by the Dodgers), but he elected to go to Houston after playing college baseball at Nebraska in 2022 and then at South Mountain Community College in ’23.

Jelkin ended up being Houston’s Opening Day starter this year, and he had a 4.19 ERA in seven starts. Despite the small sample size in terms of outings, he put up strikeouts at a good rate (46 in 34.1 innings) and he had at least six strikeouts in five of those starts.

Jelkin has a fastball that can get up to 97 miles per hour to go with a slider and a changeup in his arsenal. As Future Stars Series points out, Jelkin gets a good amount of spin on his offspeed pitches that made him one of the best pitchers in the conference.

“His secondaries include a low-80s slider/curveball whose shapes and velocities tend to blend together. Nevertheless, they’re both of the high-spin variety and he throws both with conviction. He also throws a changeup with massive fading life, projecting above-average…It’s a balanced profile suggesting a reliable floor to go with some upside.”

For their last pick of Day 2, the Mets went with Oklahoma right-hander Brendan Girton in Round 10 ($184,300 slot value). Girton was an in-conference transfer as he went to the Sooners from Texas Tech. He showed a good strikeout total in 2024 (11.9 strikeouts per 9 innings), but his problem was the walks (31 in 35.2 innings to go with 9 hit-by-pitches).

Girton is another pitcher that will be mainly a reliever, but if he can figure out the command, he has the pitches to be successful.
