The man of the hour has spoken. Steve Cohen issued his first public thoughts on the Mets’ 2025 season and collapse on X. He wrote:

Mets fans everywhere. I owe you an apology . You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do our part. We will do a post-mortem and figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations We are all feeling raw emotions today. I know how much time and effort you have put into this team. The result was unacceptable. Your emotions tell me how much you care and continues to motivate the organization to do better. Thank You to the best fans in sports.

Of course, the richest owner in baseball has plenty to answer for from fans and reporters. As you might recall, when Cohen purchased the Mets, his goal was to bring a championship to Queens in his “five-year plan.” In those five years, the team missed the playoffs in 2021, exited the Wild Card round in 2022, missed the playoffs again in 2023, experienced their greatest successes under Cohen with a trip to the NLCS in 2024, and, of course, missed out in 2025.

It’ll be a busy offseason in Queens, with several coaching changes already being discussed.

President of baseball operations David Stearns will speak to the media on Monday at 3:30 PM. MMO will provide coverage of Stearns’ remarks.

The Mets had a somewhat volatile month in May. They struggled in the first half when their bats went ice cold, losing both series to the Yankees and Red Sox. Then, the Dodgers came to town, and the lead-up to this series was not an overwhelmingly optimistic one, but the Mets rose to the occasion, winning two out of three against their West Coast foes. Luckily, their bats started to wake up again towards the end of May as they continued their winning ways against the struggling White Sox and Rockies. Overall, the Mets finished May with a 15-12 record. While a handful of Mets played hero in May, a few stood out.

Offensive Player of the Month: Brett Baty

It is great to see Brett Baty producing. Despite all the adversity Baty has faced throughout his career, he is starting to show that he belongs in the big leagues. While the Mets’ bats were quiet for most of May, Baty’s bat was the most consistent. He slashed .290/.333/.581 with an OPS of .914 since the Mets recalled him on May 5. He managed to hit five home runs, produced 16 RBIs, and only struck out 14 times in 66 plate appearances. Compare that to his April numbers; he increased his batting average by .068, his on-base by .062, and his slug by .203! He also increased his OPS by .265. That is a remarkable turnaround. Brett Baty’s consistent bat kept the Mets in many games throughout the month, emphasized by his performance on May 31 against the Rockies where he hit a bases-clearing triple for the lead.

Pitcher of the Month: Kodai Senga

Kodai Senga was elite in May. Senga went 3-2 with a 1.89 ERA in six starts throughout the month. He compiled 34 strikeouts, which resulted in a 9.18 K/9. Senga also went deeper in his outings, pitching six or more innings in three of his six starts. He is continuing to do a great job at keeping the ball in the park, allowing just two home runs in the 140 total batters he faced. Senga did a remarkable job working out of jams. He stranded 87.1% of the runners on base, including a perfect 100% twice. This happened in his games against the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers. Senga’s groundball percentage rate played a big role in his May success. 43% of the balls hit in play resulted in ground balls.

His 45.4% groundball percentage is in the 66th percentile according to Baseball Savant. Senga capped off his fantastic month by securing a W against the Rockies on May 31, in which he pitched 6 and 1/3 innings, striking out seven and only allowing two earned runs on two hits.

Honorable Mention: Francisco Lindor

Like many teammates, Lindor had a very up-and-down month. He started slow, batting only .200 with one home run through his first seven games. He then got hot in both the Pirates and Cubs series. Through these games, Lindor batted .360 with two home runs, compiling nine hits in 25 at-bats. Then he went ice cold against the Yankees and Red Sox, where he slashed .174/.259/.391, ultimately resulting in a -.7 wRAA. His struggles continued against the Dodgers in which he only amassed one hit, a single, in 15 plate appearances. He persevered through his tough times and started to see better hitting days against both the White Sox and the Rockies. Lindor slashed .381/.417/.714 in these series, with a 1.131 OPS. Lindor also managed to hit two home runs, one from each side of the plate, in the 4-2 Mets win against the Rockies. Ultimately, Lindor finished the month of May, slashing .255/.339/.464 with an OPS of .802. He hit six home runs, five doubles, and drove in 17 RBIs.

Up Next

The Mets face some tough National League teams in June, kicking off summer with a trip to face the Dodgers for four games. Later in the month, the Mets take on National League East rivals, the Braves and Phillies. They travel to both of these teams on a road trip stretch starting June 17 to June 22. Then the Braves come to New York for a four-game series beginning June 23. These are all pivotal games as the National League East race tightens each day. As of June 1, the Mets have a very slim one-game margin ahead of the Phillies for the NL East. The Braves are not too far behind at 9.5 games out. These June games will impact who will win the NL East.

The New York Mets got another look at pitcher Clay Holmes as he took the mound against the Washington Nationals on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie. The game unfolded in two distinct halves for New York; an impressive start followed by a shaky finish. Despite building a commanding 6-0 lead, the Mets’ bullpen faltered, allowing Washington to rally and tie the game at six. However, New York managed to recover late and nab the win, 7-6.

Holmes delivered another stellar performance, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out eight, allowing just one hit and three walks. His remarkable spring continued, bringing his total to 9 2/3 innings pitched with no earned runs, two hits, and 13 strikeouts. Edwin Díaz also took the mound, escaping a jam by striking out three straight after issuing two walks. Dakota Hawkins, Grant Hartwig, Connor Overton, and Rico Garcia all contributed scoreless outings, but Genesis Cabrera and Daniel Juarez struggled.

Cabrera surrendered five runs on four hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning. Juarez finished the frame, recording the final two outs but conceding one run on one hit and a walk.

There was promising news beyond Holmes’ performance, as Kodai Senga threw 50 pitches in a backfield session. Mets assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel highlighted Senga’s two sinkers as particularly impressive, as reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic.

Offensively, the Mets started strong, overwhelming Nationals starter Jake Irvin. Mark Vientos opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning. Pete Alonso followed with a single, Jeff McNeil doubled, and Luis De Los Santos walked, setting the stage for Jakson Reetz, who crushed a grand slam off Irvin to extend the lead to 6-0.

Reetz, a catcher, delivered in a big moment following the news that Francisco Alvarez would be sidelined six-to-eight weeks due to a hamate bone injury. The Mets’ bats went quiet until the eighth, when Travis Swaggerty tripled to left after a misplay by Nationals outfielder Darren Baker. Luis De Los Santos then drove in Swaggerty to put the Mets back on top for good.

Player of The Game: Clay Holmes

In the second inning, he retired the side.

After throwing strikes against the Marlins, Blackburn threw 17 strikes and 15 balls to Boston. He got behind 2-0 to Alex Bregman with no one on and one out in the first before the team’s newest free agent acquisition hit a single.
“Sinker’s been a pitch I’ve been working on, today I just really couldn’t control it,” Blackburn told the media after finishing his outing, “That’s what spring training is for. I feel like (Francisco Alvarez) and I talked in between innings after the first and made a little bit of an adjustment as far as set-up and location-wise, and I feel like it was better in the second inning.”

A kitchen sink pitcher, Blackburn threw his sinker a career-low 13.6% of the time in 2024. It was also the least effective pitch within his arsenal. Blackburn’s sinker held a run value of negative seven in 2024, and hitter’s batted .478 against the bitch (.344 xBA) and slugged .674 (.475 xSLG). According to Baseball Savant, Blackburn’s fastball run value in 2024 was -16 (the second percentile). However, his offspeed and breaking run value were both three (84th percentile for offspeed and 71st percentile for breaking).

Blackburn’s manager agreed it was a mixed bag, calling his performance “okay“.

“They got him in that first inning where he got behind the hitters,” Carlos Mendoza said. “It was good to see him go back out there for a second inning, second up, and make some adjustments, and he was a lot better.”

Mendoza also stressed that coming off of what he called a “freak injury,” Blackburn experiencing a spinal fluid leak in his back last September, he’s happy to see him pitching healthily

“The fact that he’s out there competing, we’re not worried about results right now,” Mendoza said, “It’s more about getting him feeling good physically and then working on his pitches.”

Fringe starters like Blackburn, Tylor Megill and Griffin Canning must make every spring start count. With both Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea expected to begin the season on the injured list, two spots in the rotation are up for grabs.

He played college ball at Shorter University in Georgia, where he was a star pitcher at the Division II school. Pintaro won National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America First Team honors in 2021 and was named to the Second Team in 2022. In 2021, the right-hander pitched to a 2.93 ERA over 101 ⅓ innings, striking out 150 batters. He struck out 136 batters in 2022, throwing 96 innings and accumulating a 3.47 ERA. He spent six seasons as a college pitcher (missing 2018 and gaining an extra year of eligibility due to COVID). He didn’t sign as an undrafted player in 2020 and didn’t find luck in the 2022 Draft.

After gaining experience in the Draft (it was his first time really learning about pitch design and movement profiles), Pintaro took the independent ball route, pitching for the Glacier Range Riders in the Pioneer League. His 6.93 ERA (90 ⅔ innings) in 2023 was a far cry from his collegiate numbers, but he worked with former major league catcher Austin Nola to hone his skill. Nola pointed out that Pintaro tipped his pitches. Through 14.1 innings in 2024, Pintaro struck out 23, walking only one when the Mets purchased his contract.

Once signed, Pintaro flew through the organization. He pitched to a 2.50 ERA in nine games with Brooklyn in 2024, starting seven of the nine. He allowed 10 earned runs on 28 hits, walking 14 and striking out 35 through 36 innings. Pintaro found similar success two months later in Binghamton, starting seven games for the Rumble Ponies. Through 34 innings, he gave up 26 hits, 12 earned runs, 10 walks and struck out 34. By the end of the 2024 season, he made a start for Syracuse, delivering a clean four innings, giving up four hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

While his strikeout rate is elite in a small sample size (22.9% in High-A, 25.0% in Double-A), his walk rate remains high. Pintaro walked 9.2% of batters in Brooklyn and 7.4% in Binghamton. He’ll have to work on control and limiting the number of balls thrown per at-bat to progress further.

2025 Outlook

Pintaro can crack the Mets’ roster during 2025 if he continues on the path he set for himself in 2024. While all signs point to the team using him as a reliever, they may very well utilize him similarly to José Buttó — a starter turned reliever who can provide length. While Pintaro didn’t receive an invite to spring training, it’s a moot point. If a player deserves the call-up, he’ll get it. It’ll require a 40-man roster spot, but he’ll have earned it. However, before Pintaro can earn that call, he needs to improve his control in Triple-A Syracuse and see how he fares against MLB-ready talent.

The Mets considered the future when they signed Adbert Alzolay. The former Chicago Cubs closer had Tommy John surgery in August of 2024 and almost certainly will miss all of 2025. In early January, the Mets signed him to a two-year minor league deal. Alzolay gets to rehab with the Mets, and the team obtains an intriguing bullpen arm for the 2026 season.

Chicago signed Alzolay as an amateur free agent in 2012 and made his major league debut in 2019. The Cubs were still trying to use him as a starter as recently as 2021, where he pitched in 29 games, making 21 starts. That year he tossed 125 1/3 innings with a 4.58 ERA, 4.65 FIP, 1.162 WHIP and a 92 ERA+. He then missed most of 2022 with a shoulder and lat injury.

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Alzolay had a breakout campaign in 2023. Over 64 innings and 58 games, he had a 2.67 ERA, 3.02 FIP, 1.016 WHIP and a 160 ERA+. The Cubs moved him to the back of the bullpen, and he seized the opportunity, saving 22 games. Alzolay’s Baseball Savant page was filled with red. His fastball, averaging at 95.3 mph, was in the 73rd percentile, and his 3.61xERA was in the 74th percentile. His 5.1% BB% was in the 92nd percentile. Hitters were barreling him only 6% of the time (81st percentile). Pitch tracking credited him for throwing six different pitches in 2023:

Slider (avg 87.5 mph) 45.1%

Four Seamer (avg 95.3 mph) 20.7%

Sinker (avg 95.3 mph) 19.3%

Cutter (avg 91.1 mph) 10%

Sweeper (avg 82.6 mph) 4.4%

Changeup (avg 87.8 mph) 0.5%

However, 2024 was a different story for the right-hander before injury. Over 17 1/3 innings, he allowed 13 runs, nine earned, on 19 hits and six walks. It’s a small sample size, but his WHIP ballooned in 2024. Compared to his career 1.157 WHIP, Alzolay pitched to a 1.442 WHIP in 2024. His FIP was also sky-high at 7.38 (career 4.30).

Rehab schedules from Tommy John surgery have become highly regimented over the last few years. Plenty of players have bounced back from the surgery well. That said, it’s always a mystery what a player looks like after the surgery. There’s a chance he can make a few appearances in September, but with an arm like Alzolay, the Mets might not want to rush his progress.

2026 will tell what the Mets do with his arsenal. The Mets have taken pitchers with large pitch arsenals over the year and highlighted their most successful pitches to remake their profile on the field. The team found success in a similar approach with Reed Garrett, who dominated hitters with his split finger in 2024.

“It’s a lot of the stuff that goes into the behind the scenes, like the quality of life things for families that matter for people with kids… that actually takes a bigger weight than most people would assume. They took great care of my family andthat meant a lot to me..”

Sproat is the standout of the group and the best prospect in the Mets’ farm system. Between three levels in 2024, the 24-year-old went 7-4 with a 3.40 ERA through just over 116 innings pitched. He struck out 131 batters, allowed only 44 walks, and gave up 44 earned runs (14 home runs). He struggled in his seven starts with Triple-A Syracuse, posting a 7.53 ERA, ballooning his overall 2024 ERA. He pitched to a 2.45 ERA in Binghamton and a 1.07 ERA in Brooklyn.

Alzolay is an intriguing pickup as well. He struggled in 2024 with the Cubs but was lights out in 2023, posting a 2.67 ERA while saving 22 games. If he can reduce his walk rate percentage again (8.0% compared to 5.1% in 2023) and limit the home runs (a whopping 8.0% in just 17 innings compared to 2.0% in 64 innings), the Mets might have struck gold once more.

The Mets finally have two reliable lefties in Minter and Young, but Cabrera would be their first line of defense in case of emergency. In 69 games with the Blue Jays in 2024, he pitched to a 3.59 ERA. However, his FIP (5.13) was high, and he’s proven to be streaky at times.

After missing most of the 2024 season with a wrist injury, Williams will look for a bounce-back year in 2025. He struggled once he returned in 2024 but saw success once promoted to Triple-A Syracuse at the end of the year, hitting .364/.533/.546/1.079 in six contests. A contender to make his debut sometime in the 2025 season, this spring could be an opportunity for Williams to prove what he’s capable of.

PECOTA projects the Mets will finish the 2025 season with an 88.9-73.1 record.
