After being officially eliminated from postseason contention in game one, the Mets followed up with another loss, falling to the Nationals by a score of 5-3.

Rick Porcello got the start in game two, facing off against Anibal SanchezPorcello was unable to put his season-long struggles behind him, lasting just three innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits. In the end, Porcello finished the season with one win, seven losses, and an 5.64 ERA.

Pitching

After pitching two scoreless innings to start the game, Rick Porcello couldn’t keep the Nationals off the board in the third. Trea Turner opened the scoring with a solo home run. Yadiel Hernandez then hit a one-out RBI single to expand the Nationals lead to 2-0. Needing just one more out to escape the inning with just two runs allowed, Porcello gave up three straight two-out RBI singles, giving the Nationals a 5-0 lead.

Erasmo Ramirez  gave up just one hit in the fourth inning, lowering his ERA to 0.63 on the season. Dellin Betances followed suit, throwing a scoreless fifth inning, allowing two walks and collecting two strikeouts.

Jared Hughes relieved Betances in the sixth and continued the bullpen’s success, giving up just one hit in the inning.

In the end, Mets pitchers allowed five runs, Porcello accounting for all, on ten hits. The bullpen had a scoreless outing, pitching three innings and allowing just two hits and two walks.

Offense

After falling down 5-0 early, Pete Alonso struck back in the fourth inning, blasting a two-run home run to lower the Nationals lead to 5-2.

The Mets loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning, but came out of it with just one run scored thanks to a Todd Frazier RBI single, cutting the Nationals lead to 5-3.

The Mets got the game tying run up to bat in the seventh and last inning, but could not cash in, as Brandon Nimmo grounded into a force out and Jeff McNeil lined out to end the game.

Overall, the Mets collected just three runs on five hits. Brandon Nimmo was the only Mets player to have multiple hits on the evening, collecting two hits in four at bats.
