Marcus Stroman was not the sharpest version of himself on Saturday night as he picked up his first loss of the 2021 season in the Mets’ 7-1 loss to the Nationals. Stroman gave up eight hits, five runs, four earned runs and two walks over four innings pitched. He accumulated just four strikeouts over 72 pitches thrown (43 strikes) in his outing against the Nationals.

In his postgame press conference, manager Luis Rojas said Stroman had pitches that were close and the Nationals had good plate discipline to lay off the pitches. Rojas said he doesn’t think emotion got in his way, but that the Nationals were disciplined and had a good approach against Stroman.

Stroman also met with the media following his outing on Saturday. He said his body feels great and his stuff was there despite the rough outing.

“It’s just baseball, man. It’s just one of those starts where you kind of have to wash it, like I do honestly any other start,” said Stroman. He says he goes out there and competes but that he has to be better in the game.

“I have to make pitches and I have to limit the runs, and I wasn’t able to do that today,” said Stroman.

Stroman will look to ‘wash’ this start as he described and bounce back the next time he takes the mound.

The right-hander’s ERA now stands at 2.25 on the campaign.
