Still I Rise: A Matt Harvey Odyssey

You may write me off in Mets history,
Due to my bitter, twisted highs.
You may trod me through the Citi Field dirt,
But still, like my fastball, I’ll rise. The Dark Knight will rise.

Does my countenance upset you?
Does it beset you with gloom?
‘Cause I stride seemingly like I’m David Wells,
Pumping firsts in a Yankee locker room.

Just like peaks and like troughs,
With the certainty of trials.
Just like hope springs eternal with my every throw,
Still I’ll rise. The Dark Knight will rise.

Dear Met fan, do you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
My shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my woeful lies?

Does my naughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard.
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got Adriana Lima,
Chained to my bedroom guard.

You may shoot me with your pain.
You may cut me off until it dies.
You may kill me with your sadness.
But still, like my BAC, still I rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
All the women I’ve comprised?
Perhaps because I pitch like I’ve got black diamonds,
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the depths of World Series history’s shame.
Still I rise.

Up from my past, Tommy John and TOS, so rooted in pain.
Still I rise.

I’m a Dark Knight, leaping and ever so wide.
Tears swelling I implore you Met fan stay by my side.

I shall leave behind nights of drunken terror and fear.
I rise.

Into the Citi Field day that’s wondrously clear.
Still I rise.

Bringing the gifts that my predecessors blessed to my kin,
Met fan I fight on in your honor.

Resting not before a World Series win. I rise.
Still I rise.
I the Dark Knight. Still I shall rise.

Note: It’s been quite some time since I had written for MMO but I felt it would be fair recompense to Joe D for having me here. I wrote this as an alternate rendition to Maya Angelou’s “And Still I Rise” (a tremendous commentary with powerful verse).

Like most Mets fans waking up on Sunday to see the unfortunate news on Matt Harvey, I was upset with his latest development.

To me, however, it was a different kind of disappointment. I was upset at seeing the talented all-world starter that revived the franchise go down to the depths in such fashion in 4 years’ time.

However, there is no one player on the Mets that I would bet against to return to glory with full force than Matt Harvey. I firmly believe this unfortunate incident will prove to be a turning point in his Mets career and the traverses of this resilient underdog Mets team.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to read this excerpt, and my thanks to Joe D and all the superlative members who make this site the class of baseball dialogue. Cheers to all!
