According to what a team source told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets plan to promote left-handed prospect Steven Matz from Triple-A Las Vegas and will use some form of a six-man rotation.

Manager Terry Collins declined to confirm the promotion, but the cat’s out of the bag as Matz has already been told that he’ll be joining the rotation.

Apparently an announcement will be made on Friday about how this second reincarnation of the six-man rotation will work.

After a rough road trip the Mets could use some positive news and Matz is someone that Mets fans will be excited to see.

The Mets top pick in 2009 under general manager Omar Minaya, Matz is considered by many experts to be the best of the bunch, and Frank Viola has compared him to a young Madison Bumgarner.

“The guy has been mowing through lineups and able to command his fastball to both sides of the plate and have his breaking ball and develop his change-up,” said Mets catcher Johnny Monell, who worked with Matz with Las Vegas.

“The guy is something special and works hard between his starts and takes care of his body and works hard and prepares himself to go out and dominate every fifth day and he’s been doing that.”

Matz could debut and make his first start for the Mets during his regular turn on Sunday, which is when Jon Niese was expected to start. We’ll know for sure on Friday, but get ready, here he comes!

Steven Matz has not been called up as of this afternoon, multiple sources confirm to MMO’s Clayton Collier.

The Las Vegas 51s have not been made aware of any such move yet, but as has been reported for several weeks now, expect Matz in the majors sooner rather than later.

The Mets play nine-straight games from June 30 to July 8.

Sandy Alderson might have something brewing. Who knows what that can be? However, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported on twitter that a source indicated to him that the Mets are calling up Steven Matz, their dominant left-handed pitching prospect from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Matz, 24, is 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 90 1/3 innings pitched (14 starts) for Las Vegas this season.

Rosenthal did not cite any time frame or what the corresponding move would be. His second tweet noted that the news isn’t confirmed, but “something seems to be in the works.”

He also noted that his source said that more would be known later today.

Let the speculation begin, but stay tuned folks!
