It was not Steven Matz‘s best tuneup but of course, it’s still early.

The lefty had a pretty good first after giving up an infield hit. He managed to retire Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez, and Christian Vazquez after Gorkys Hernandez reached first.

In the second inning, Matz walked two guys but still had a chance to get out of it. Unfortunately for him, he could not reel it in. The unlikely bash bros of Chad De La Guerra and Gorkys Hernandez tagged him for four runs. Guerra had a RBI single and Hernandez hit a three-run homer. He did manage to retire J.D. Martinez to end the inning.

In the third, Matz got the first two outs but gave up a two-out single to Tate Matheny. Arquimedes Caminero came in to relieve him. All told, Matz’s final line was: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. His final pitch count was 52.

Following the start, Matz told reporters that he did not like the way his curveball today so he kept throwing it to try and work through the kinks. He mentioned that he was able to do that because of the fact it’s spring training.
