The Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals today at First Data Field in their second day of action this spring by a score of 8-6.

Pitching:

Sean Gilmartin toed the rubber for the Mets this afternoon, tossing two innings, allowing one run on a big fly from Bryce Harper.

Logan Taylor was next in line and went two scoreless innings. However, the Nationals would increase their lead in the fifth after Neftali Soto took Jerry Blevins deep for a two-run dinger.

In the sixth, the Nationals busted the game open after Andrew Stevenson and Matt Skole each hit homers off Kevin McGowan to make it 7-0. McGowan was tagged for four runs in just one third of an inning.

Adam Wilk pitched 1.2 clean innings, but the Nationals tacked on another run off of Josh Smoker in the ninth.

Offense:

The Mets weren’t able to crack the scoreboard until the sixth when Michael Conforto drove in a run with a single, but was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play,

In the eight, the Mets added three runs to their total after Dominic Smith, Travis Taijeron and Ty Kelly each walked with the bases juiced to make it a 7-4 game at the time.

In the ninth, the Mets registered two more runs to make it an 8-6 game, but couldn’t overtake Washington for the lead as the Nats completed the victory.

On deck:

The Mets will next take on the Detroit Tigers tomorrow afternoon at First Data Field. Chris Flexen will get the ball for New York and will be opposed by Matt Boyd. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
