The New York Mets were shutout 2-0 by the Houston Astros on Friday at First Data Field.
Pitching
Noah Syndergaard pitched six strong innings of one-run ball. He gave up four hits and no walks. He also struck out five Astros. Syndergaard lowered his spring ERA from 3.52 to 2.63. He now has 11 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.
Fernando Salas came in seventh after Syndergaard’s day was over. He was taken out after one out as he gave up two hits. Pinch-runner Conrad Gregor helped Salas out as he was thrown out at home plate after the second hit of the inning. Jerry Blevins then relieved Salsa and finished the inning unscathed.
Addison Reed pitched the eighth inning and gave up a hit, walk, and a solo home run, while striking out one. Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth spring game and his second since returning from the World Baseball Classic.
The combination of Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud allowed four stolen bases in four attempts.
Offense
Offense was at a premium for the Mets as they only had five hits and three walks on the day. The Mets made the most noise in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Desmond Lindsay, Ty Kelly, and Kevin Plawecki then went down in order leaving all three men on base.
Jose Reyes, Curtis Granderson, John Mora, and Wilmer Flores all had hits, with Reyes having two. Lucas Duda, Travis d’Arnaud, and Rene Rivera all reached base via base on balls.
On Deck
The Mets travel to Champion Stadium on Saturday to play the Atlanta Braves. The Mets will send Rafael Montero to the mound to face an old friend in R.A. Dickey. The game will not be broadcasted on SNY, PIX 11, but will be on MLB.tv.
