RHP Luis Severino (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Eury Pérez (1-0, 2.25)

The Mets look to make it three wins in a row tonight as they take on the Miami Marlins on the road in Jupiter, Florida. It is the first time this spring that the Mets will play back-to-back night games.

The star of the show last night was Francisco Álvarez, who threw out three runners on the bath paths, including two who were caught stealing with Adam Ottavino on the mound. Álvarez’s second home run of the spring was a difference maker as he helped lead the Mets to a 3-1 win.

One of the stories of yesterday’s game was the Mets’ bullpen as Ottavino, Jake Diekman, Jorge López, Shintaro Fujinami, Josh Walker and Grant Hartwig all made appearances. The six pitchers allowed no runs and a total of three hits between them as the competition heats up for the final spots on the Opening Day roster.

The story of tonight’s contest is the starting rotation. Severino will make his second start of the spring and he’ll be followed by José Buttó, who is competing for the final rotation spot.

Three Things To Watch For

  1. Severino’s second start: Severino threw 30 pitches over two innings last Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out one batter. So far this spring, most starters have stretched out to three innings in their second outing. We are hoping that he has another smooth appearance as he continues to ramp up for the start of the season.
  2. José Buttó and the battle for the final rotation spot: Buttó and Tylor Megill have both impressed in spring thus far as both pitchers compete alongside Joey Lucchesi for the last spot in the rotation. This will be Buttó’s third outing as he has already pitched three innings over two games, scattering four hits and allowing no runs while striking out three batters in the process. Megill has been spectacular over eight innings – can Buttó keep pace tonight?
  3. Last Outfield Spot Battle: Trayce Thompson is off to an amazing start this spring, going 5-for-10 over six games with two homers, a double and six RBI. Also battling for that final outfield spot is DJ Stewart, who has gotten off on the wrong foot with a .154/.214/.154 slash line after bursting on the scene last season. Both are getting the start today!

Let’s go Mets!
