Second baseman Neil Walker arrived to camp at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie and told reporters that it still hasn’t sunk in that he’s with the Mets. Come on, Neil, it’s been two months. He is happy that Terry Collins views him as a number five hitter and says he’s the most comfortable hitting there

“That’s a place I really enjoy hitting,’’ the switch-hitting Walker said. “I’m a line-drive hitter from both sides of the plate, and I’ve always been the kind of guy who puts the ball in play. With the guys in front of me, there certainly will be the opportunity to drive some runs in here.’’

Michael Conforto also arrived to Mets camp today and told reporters that he wants to maintain that same hunger he had last season and not take his role on the team for granted. He is excited for the coming season and he intends to use his experience last season to keep him motivated to do better.

While he hasn’t played right field as a pro, Conforto said he worked out in RF during the offseason in preparation for this season, and also took a lot of batting practice against left-handed pitching. “I just want to become a more complete player.”
