After starting all of their top hitting prospects in Triple-A to start the season, the Mets may be seeing one of them on  back the big-league roster sooner than they may have expected. After Omar Narváez left Wednesday’s game with a calf injury, the Mets will have Francisco Álvarez in Queens on Friday in case the team needs to activate him, sources tell MMO’s Michael Mayer.

Álvarez is 4-16 in the young season for Triple-A Syracuse and has already launched two home runs and has added a stolen base. Álvarez also has been excelling on the defense, throwing out three of five baserunners who attempted to steal a base on him.

If Álvarez is indeed activated, it will be festinating to see how Buck Showalter manages his playing time. Álvarez and Tomás Nido both hit from the right
side of the plate, so a platoon isn’t logical. If Álvarez is going to be on the big-league roster, it’s likely the Mets will want to give him plenty of opportunities, so he could also see time as a DH against left-handed pitchers.

If Álvarez excels on the big-league roster, it will be tough for the Mets ever send him back down, which could cause a logjam at the catcher spot with both
Narváez and Nido signed past this season

Narváez has been stellar early on this season for the Mets, going 4-14 with two walks and two RBIs. The Mets also have Michael Pérez and Nick Meyer in Syracuse as potential depth options.
