Juan Soto hit a pair of solo homers, his first two at Citi Field as a Met, but it wasn’t enough as the Diamondbacks beat the Mets 4-2 Thursday afternoon at Citi Field. It was only the second time the Mets have lost two in a row this year.
Down 3-2 in the eighth, the Mets (21-11) had a chance to tie the game with runners at second and third and one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo ended the threat.
Arizona starter Zac Gallen, who entered Thursday with a 5.57 ERA, threw six innings of one-run ball, allowed two hits and walked three. Kodai Senga, who came in with a 1.26 ERA, muddled through four innings, throwing 87 pitches, including 59 in his last two frames.
Senga worked his way out of trouble in the third, striking out Corbin Carroll with one out and runners at the corners and – after a walk to load the bases and a visit from pitching coach Jeremy Hefner – fanning Pavin Smith on three pitches to end the inning.
Arizona (17-14) got to Senga for a run in the fourth when Alek Thomas singled in a run to break a scoreless tie. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases again, this time with one out. Senga got Jose Herrera to pop out to third, and Carroll lifted a long fly ball to left that Nimmo caught with a leap at the left-field wall.
Senga gave up one run on five hits, walked three, and struck out six. His ERA is 1.38.
Veteran lefty Génesis Cabrera, who pitched for Toronto last year, faced three batters in his Mets debut. He gave up a walk and a double, recorded one out and was charged with a run when Eugenio Suárez hit a sacrifice fly off Max Kranick. The Mets added Cabrera and RHP Ty Adcock to the roster Thursday and sent down pitchers Chris Devenski and Brandon Waddell.
Geraldo Perdomo homered off Kranick in the seventh inning to give Arizona a 3-1 lead. After Soto’s second solo shot closed the gap to 3-2, Tim Tawa homered off Reed Garrett in the ninth.
