A new soccer stadium will join Citi Field and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, according to The New York Times. The 25,000-seat stadium, which will be the home of the MLS team NYCFC, is set to be built across the street from the right field foul pole at Citi Field.
The $780 million stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2027, is the focal point of a new 23-acre development in the area that is also set to include a 250-room hotel and 2,500 units of housing. The housing complex will be built by Related Companies and Sterling Equities, the development company partially owned by the Wilpon family. NYCFC will cover the entire construction cost of the stadium.
The Times also reports that the new stadium could put Mets owner Steve Cohen in a better position to win one of three currently available state casino licenses. It was previously reported that Cohen was interested in bringing a casino to the area around Citi Field, and he is in talks with Hard Rock to propose one in the area.
It should also be noted the Mets are set to receive parking revenue from the new stadium, which was a sticking point in previous negotiations from NYCFC owners to build a soccer stadium nearby Citi Field.
