Last night, I came across an old Rickey Henderson baseball card I had saved over the years, which led me to looking up his Baseball Reference page. I still look at his career numbers with such awe and amazement. Absolutely jaw-dropping.
I thought it would be fun to base this week’s Mets quiz on stolen bases so I did a little research on the topic.
In 1922, Max Carey of the Pittsburgh Pirates had a streak of 31 consecutive stolen bases without being caught.
It was a record that stood until 1975, when Davey Lopes collected 38 consecutive stolen bases with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Along comes a fella by the name of Vince Coleman, then with the St. Louis Cardinals, who obliterated Lopes’ record with an incredible 50 consecutive stolen bases in 1988. Wow…
Of course, by the time Coleman signed his four year deal with the Mets, injuries took a toll on him and he was never the same player that led the majors in steals for six straight seasons including 110 in his rookie year. It didn’t end well.
Getting back to Max Carey, the season he set the consecutive steals streak, he stole 51 bases in total and was caught only two times. That is what I call proficiency.
They say that the best base stealers in the game have a stolen base success rate of 80 percent or higher. And believe it or not, the highest stolen base percentage of all time belongs to a one-time Met and no it’s not Rickey Henderson.
