In a huge announcement, The Athletic reports that SportsNet New York, who broadcasts the Mets games locally announced it will be releasing a direct-to-consumer streaming services to allow Mets fans without a cable subscription or those out of market to watch Mets games reports says Steve Raab, president of SNY.
The Mets will be following suit with the New York Yankees, who in 2023 also went with a direct-to-consumer product, the Gotham Sports App, that allows subscribers the right to stream New York Yankees, New York Knicks, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, Brooklyn Nets and New Jersey Devils games. 22 MLB teams currently offer bundles that allow their fans to watch games without a cable TV subscription.
The SNY announcement makes them the ninth team to offer a product that allows subscribers to watch the games without a cable subscription this season and it is worth noting that they are the first third-party regional sports network to offer the services in conjunction with MLB. This deal with MLB will include features such as live stats and highlights and a combination bundle that will allow Mets fans access to Mets games in-market via SNY and all other out-of-market games through MLB.tv.
SNY’s price points will be at $24.99 a month, $124.99 for a season-long and $149.99 for a yearlong subscription. In comparison, Gotham Sports charges $29.99 a month for its services. The Mets are hoping to reach “mid-five figures” in subscriptions within the first year.
One of the biggest benefits of a standalone product is that it avoids blackouts, which many fans despise and leave them unable to watch their teams games due to national agreements. This news will come as great news to Mets fans in both the Tri-State area and those in outside markets who have been unable to purchase a product that allows them to watch the Mets without having to subscribe to a larger MLB bundle that would give them access to all MLB games.
