According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, the New York Mets remain in on trade discussions with the Miami Marlins about catcher J.T. Realmuto.
Sherman says that this is because Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has determined that his version of the club always pursues the best players.
However, internally a deal for the 27-year old backstop still seems like a long shot.
As Sherman notes, a more likely option for the club would be a defense-first catcher such as Martin Maldonado. The interest in Maldonado makes sense, as Van Wagenen has emphasized a desire to improve defensively up-the-middle this offseason.
Other potential options behind the plate who are still available include Yasmani Grandal and Wilson Ramos, and Francisco Cervelli in the trade market.
