The New York Mets made a corresponding move to call up tonight’s starter Drew Gagnon, who’s making his first career MLB start against the Phillies, by optioning right-handed reliever Paul Sewald to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Sewald, 28, has a 5.05 earned-run average in 41 innings with the Mets this season. His 76 ERA+ is a far cry from the 92 value he posted in 65.1 innings in 2017.

He’s had just two stretches of three consecutive scoreless outings this year (3.2 innings from May 19 to May 24 and 2.1 innings from June 14 to June 20).

His fielding independent pitching rating (4.32) shows that he’s been a victim of some poor defensive play behind him, but a 1.293 WHIP and a bloated ERA certainly didn’t help his cause.
