Seth Lugo continued his winning ways in Wednesday’s 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins in what has been a very impressive rookie campaign.
Lugo pitched 5.1 innings on Wednesday while allowing two runs on five hits. He walked three batters on the day while striking out two.
Lugo picked up his fifth consecutive win on Wednesday, improving his record to 5-1 with an ERA of 2.67 and a WHIP of 1.07. Manager, Terry Collins could do nothing but sing praise of Lugo and fellow rookie, Robert Gsellman.
“This kid has come here and done nothing but saved us,” Collins said. “Him and Robert.” (Newsday)
With season-ending injuries to Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler and Jon Niese, the two rookies have taken the bull by the horns.
Without Gsellman and Lugo, the Mets would not be where they are right now. The two pitchers have helped this team to an improbable run at the postseason. Lugo is ready for what’s next, if given the opportunity to pitch in a postseason game.
“I expect a lot of adrenaline,” Lugo said. “That helps.”
Lugo was said to be on a pitch count of between 75-80 pitches on Wednesday as there are some rumblings of the young pitcher having troubles with fatigue. He will now get some time to rest as the Mets ready themselves for a possible Wild Card game.
If Lugo is to pitch again this season, it would be against the Cubs in the NLDS.
