The New York Mets took a road trip to Jupiter on Wednesday for a matchup against the Miami Marlins, a fellow NL East foe. The Mets defeated the Marlins 6-3. The offense struck for eight hits, backing up the Mets’ pitching staff, which gave up just three runs.

Right-handed pitcher Christian Scott took the mound for the Mets to start things off against the Marlins. This was Scott’s second appearance this spring, but his first start and the Mets’ first official long look at the righty this spring. Scott was opposed on the mound by Marlins’ left-handed pitcher, Patrick Monteverde. This was Monteverde’s third appearance of the spring.

Coming off a very strong 2023 season in the minors, Scott picked up right where he left off in his first spring start of 2024. He pitched four great innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits and striking out seven. His only mistake came in the third inning when he gave up a solo home run to Jonah Bride.

Other than that, Scott looked strong in his four-inning appearance for the Mets as he continues to make a name for himself and battle for the chance to see the big leagues in 2024. His fastball was up to 97 mph (sat 95/96), ) with seven whiffs, he threw quite a few sweepers (64% CSW), and his slider was up to 89 mph.

Following Scott, the Mets Edwin Díaz to the mound for his third spring appearance. Díaz did not have his best performance, only making it 2/3 of an inning. He gave up one earned run on no hits and two walks and only struck out one through 21 pitches before the Mets turned the ball over to right-handed pitcher Wilkin Ramos to finish the inning.

Most importantly, Díaz came out of the game healthy and told reporters he would pitch again on Thursday in a minor league game.

The Mets then sent Phil Bickford, Luis Moreno, Nolan Clenney, and Ben Simon out to the mound following Díaz.

Bickford struck out one in one inning pitched; Luis Moreno struggled, giving up one run on one hit and four walks. However, he also struck out four. Clenney and Simon both pitched well as well. Simon gave up a hit and struck out one in his appearance.

Offensively, Brandon Nimmo led the offense at the plate, going two-for-three with a double, single, walk, and three RBIs.

Joey Wendle and Zack Short both also continued their impressive spring slates, each going one-for-two with a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Short also had one RBI in the game. Omar De Los Santos also contributed with a hit and a run scored as the Mets went on to defeat the Marlins 6-3 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Christian Scott

Scott’s lights-out performance on the mound earned him Wednesday’s Mesmerized Player of the Game honors. As mentioned above, Scott gave up just one run on two hits and struck out seven in four strong innings against the Marlins. He has risen to be the Mets’ top pitching prospect over the last year and will begin the season in Triple-A Syracuse.
