Sandy Alderson is no longer the Mets team president, says owner Steve Cohen.

Alderson is now with the team as an advisor with Cohen becoming more and more involved in day-to-day operations. That includes Cohen spending every Thursday in Mets meetings and not as his hedge fund.

Alderson has been with the Mets since 2011. Originally hired to replace Omar Minaya as the general manager, Alderson has seen his role grow over the years. He took a leave of absence from the team in 2018 due to a recurrence of cancer and announced he would not return to the Mets in the same position.

Alderson spent two years with the Oakland Athletics as their senior advisor of baseball operation to general manager Billy Beane.

When Cohen bought the team, Alderson returned. In September 2020, Cohen hired Alderson as team president, replacing Saul Katz who served in that role since 1980.

Alderson’s son, Bryn, was with the Mets as an assistant general manager. He was let go last week. The Mets did not comment on the personnel decision. The Mets current assistant general managers are now Ian Levin and Ben Zauzmer. Bryn Alderson had been with the Mets since 2011 when his father took the reigns.

The Mets did report in September that Sandy Alderson would step down as the team president when they found his successor. Cohen did not immediately announce who would be his replacement. Cohen did say they could go all season without one.
