It was the night of “C’s” in game two of Wednesday’s doubleheader between the Mets and Braves as the Mets sought to try to sweep the Braves. Christan Scott and Chris Sale cruised on Christmas in July at Citi Field. Scott and Sale went toe-to-toe through five scoreless innings, but the Braves struck first off of Scott in the sixth to break the scoreless tie and ultimately went on to shutout New York 1-0 to take game three of the series.
Scott had given up just two hits through five innings and didn’t walk a batter, but he ran into trouble in the sixth giving up a lead-off double and a single right after to put two on. After recording his sixth strikeout, he gave up an RBI single to Matt Olson that gave the Braves a 1-0 lead. That was all Scott allowed, however as he limited the damage to keep the Mets in it.
Scott’s day was done after six, which was the most innings he’s pitched this season. He gave up just the one earned run on five hits, walked one, and struck out seven.
But that was all the Braves needed as Sale kept the Mets’ offense down for six innings and the Braves’ bullpen finished the job as they went on to shutout the Mets 1-0 in game two of the doubleheader, salvaging one game in the series.
The Mets only mustered two hits in the game, a single each from Carson Benge and Eric Wagaman.
A.J. Minter, Cionel Pérez and Daniel Duarte each pitched a scoreless inning for the Mets.
Player of the Game
Wednesday’s evening player of the game, though he gave up the game’s only run was Christian Scott for his six innings of one-run baseball in which he struck out seven.
On Deck
The Mets welcome the Miami Marlins to Citi Field on Thursday for the start of a three-game series. It will be right-handed pitcher Eury Perez (5-8, 3.56 ERA, 106 SO) on the mound for the visiting Marlins against the Mets’ young star, right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean (7-7, 3.32 ERA, 142 SO) in game one on Thursday night.
