Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that the Boston Red Sox and Pete Alonso met over Zoom during the Winter Meetings. The two parties are now trying to schedule a time to meet in person in Orlando, where Alonso has been “in and out” during the week.
Cotillo notes that it would be a surprise for a deal to come together between any club and Alonso by the end of the week, but it could take just one call to get things done.

Per Mark Feinsand of MLB, the sticking point between the Mets and Alonso might be the amount of years in the contract. New York might be hesitant to go past three years, while Alonso likely is looking for a four or five year deal.
Feinsand also noted that with the money saved from not signing Díaz, the Mets can allocate those resources to another bullpen arm and Alonso.

Per Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic, the Mets are reportedly open to moving SP David Peterson. With needs in the bullpen, the outfield and at first base, the Mets might find themselves better positioned to bolster their roster via the trade market. While Kodai Senga has been the most circulated name, Peterson’s is surprising. With one year left of control, the Mets are reportedly holding a “high price” on any of their starters.
Peterson had an All-Star year in 2025, arguably the best Mets starter. While he struggled in the back half of the season, he still pitched to a respectable 4.22 ERA in 30 games. For reference, he had a 3.06 ERA entering the All-Star break through 18 games. A lifetime Met, he owns a career 4.12 ERA over 622.2 innings and 131 games. He has a 23% career strikeout rate and 9% career walk rate.
If the Mets were to move Peterson, it could open the door for their younger core of starters in Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat and Christian Scott.
