The New York Mets badly needed a win on Wednesday night to get a split in the four-game series against the Atlanta Braves and shortstop Amed Rosario was a big reason why they pulled out a 4-1 victory.
Rosario made the defense play of the game – perhaps most important of the season to date – in the bottom of the eighth inning with Mets up two runs and runners on first and third with Nick Markakis coming up at the go-ahead run.
Markakis smoked a ball up the middle that Rosario dove for and stopped, flipped the ball to second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera who barehanded the ball and threw to first to end the inning with a sparkling double play and the Mets needed sorely.
“It’s the play that we’ve been lacking,” manager Mickey Callaway said after the game. “We had a similar play the other day and we didn’t get the turn. That was probably the difference in the game.”
Rosario would double in the top of the ninth inning and came around to score when Brandon Nimmo doubled right after. The run-scoring hit by Nimmo extended the Mets lead to 4-1.
The 22-year-old Rosario also tripled and scored in the seventh inning as he finished with his third consecutive multi-hit game. He finished the series against the Braves going 7-for-17.
On the eight-game road trip, Rosario hit .357/.400/.571 with five runs scored, four RBI, two walks and two stolen bases.
