The New York Mets (2-2) announced on Tuesday that 24-year-old rookie left-handed pitcher, David Peterson will get the start tonight for the Mets as they go for a two-game sweep against the Boston Red Sox (1-3) at Fenway Park.

According to Metsmerized’s Matthew Brownstein on Twitter, with Peterson’s start tonight, he becomes just the 13th Mets’ left-handed pitcher to make his Major League debut at under the age of 25-years-old. The last Mets pitcher to do so was P.J. Conlon in 2018.

Peterson, who spent the 2019 season with Double-A Binghamton, was added to the Mets 60-player pool at the outset of Summer Camp where he impressed in intrasquad games. He was placed on the taxi squad for the first road trip of the season, but will be joining the Mets and getting tonight’s start against the Red Sox.

Mets Manager, Luis Rojas had this to say about Peterson: “His demeanor, just a great demeanor. He presents as that guy who wants to compete and wants to get you out,” Rojas said. “He’s always searching, always asking questions… There’s a good package there.”

Peterson was selected by the Mets in the first round of the 2017 MLB draft as the No. 20 overall draft pick. According to Metsmerized’s Jacob Resnick on Twitter, Peterson will be the first player from the Mets’ 2017 draft class to reach the Major Leagues when he starts tonight. He was 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA with Double-A Binghamton in 2019 and has a minor league career ERA of 3.63. He is the Mets No. 10 ranked prospect.

Peterson will start against Red Sox left-handed pitcher, Matt Hall, who will also be making his Major League debut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
