robert gsellman

According to ESPN’s Adam Rubin, Mets starter Robert Gsellman is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday, to repair a torn labrum in his non-pitching left shoulder.

As you may remember, Gsellman was limited to bunting in each and every single one of his plate appearances for the Mets this season due to the injured shoulder.  At the plate, he would go 1-for-15 with two successful sacrifice bunts.  The one hit was obviously a bunt base hit.

The shoulder did not bother Gsellman on the mound and he made seven starts and one relief appearance for the Mets this season, going 4-2 in 44.2 innings pitched, with a 2.42 ERA, 1.276 WHIP, 171 ERA+, and a 2.63 FIP. He will retain his rookie status in 2017.

Depending on the Mets ability to re-sign Bartolo Colon this offseason, coupled with the rehabilitation efforts of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheelerand Steven Matz, Gsellman could find himself fighting for a spot in the Opening Day rotation during Spring Training.

More likely, Gsellman will start the year in Triple-A.  After the year he had, he will assuredly be called upon immediately should the Mets need a spot starter or to replace an injured pitcher in the rotation.
