After a couple of rough performances by the starting rotation, Robert Gsellman stepped up and put on a great performance against the Philadelphia Phillies, helping his team to a 17-0 victory.
In the longest start of his short career, Gsellman pitched to seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits. He walked two batters on the day while striking out a career-high eight.
“It felt great to finally get past the sixth inning and go seven,” Gsellman said. “The bullpen has been pitching a lot so try to help them out today.” (NY Post)
Manager, Terry Collins wanted to push Gsellman and stretch him out a bit more as the Mets enter into what now is a six game season as they try to punch their ticket into the postseason.
“I thought it was really, really important to build him up to 100 pitches so whether he [throws] 70 or 75 pitches in a playoff game, it’s easier for him. I thought I’d get him a little deeper in the game as far as pitch count goes,” Collins said.
Gsellman has solidified himself as a steady option for the Mets in the rotation. Gsellman improved his record to 3-2 on the season with an ERA of 2.56 and a WHIP of 1.27.
