robert gsellman

Through the first six innings of Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, Robert Gsellman was in full control of the game at hand. Things unraveled a bit for the rookie starter who was making his first major league start, but still he deserved a better fate than the one he ended up with.

The end line for Gsellman on Sunday doesn’t tell the true story of his day. He cruised through the first six innings of the game before trouble found him in the seventh. He allowed three straight hits to start off the inning before Terry Collins summoned Hansel Robles into the game. Robles let all three runners reach home.

“I just left pitches elevated and they took advantage of it,” Gsellman said. (Newsday)

His final line left him with a loss, giving up seven hits to go along with four runs. He walked one on the day while striking out five. Gsellman though showed he has what it takes to be a big league pitcher in the majors. In a short sample he has looked like he has the makeup to be an asset for this team going forward. He credits his time in the minors with his recent success.

“What they put me through in the minors, they got me ready to come up here and pitch.”

The gazelle will be an interesting pitcher to watch down the stretch if the Mets continue to turn to him. He certainly has some great attributes about him that could lead him to be a successful pitcher in the big leagues for years to come.
