According to Laura Albanese of Newsday, John Ricco told the media today that the chronic condition bothering Yoenis Cespedes is his heel, not his hip or quad.
Albanese notes that Cespedes did suffer from a heel injury last season, which he described as something he has dealt with repeatedly in the past. Ricco said the outfielder has been dealing with this problem since he was a teen.
Cespedes was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor on May 16. He recently began rehabbing, and is slowly working his way up to participating in baseball activity. Ricco stated today that Cespedes is just “a little ways away.”
Before his injury, Cespedes appeared in 37 games and hit .255/.316/.474 with six doubles, eight home runs and 28 RBI.
Ricco also noted that Jay Bruce is progressing and will take BP while Jason Vargas will throw live BP next week and Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to throw 70 pitches in his rehab start for the Brooklyn Cyclones on Sunday.
