Since being promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 19, middle infielder Matt Reynolds has been raking at the plate. It’s not anything new for the Tulsa, Oklahoma native who was leading the Eastern League with a .355 average and .430 on-base percentage before he was promoted from Double-A Binghamton.
Reynolds, 23, went 2-for-5 last night with a double and a run scored and is batting .400 in 55 Triple-A at-bats. He has scored 17 runs for Las Vegas in just 15 games while posting a .582 slugging percentage and 1.024 OPS.
A second-round pick out of the University of Arkansas in 2012, Reynolds has logged some significant time at shortstop but most scouts see him as a second baseman.
He struggled offensively during his first two pro seasons and batted only .226 in 433 at-bats with Class A St. Lucie in 2013. But he seems to have found his stroke this season and with it a lot of confidence. He makes good contact and employs a solid approach at the plate, possessing a good eye.
Yesterday, when asked what his plans were on improving the offense, Mets GM Sandy Alderson mentioned Wilmer Flores and Matt Reynolds without any hesitation.
That bodes well for a promotion for Reynolds at some point this season.
