According to Andrew DiComo of MLB.com, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has yet to resume working out since he landed on the disabled list last week with a strained left hamstring.  This makes it highly unlikely that Reyes will return to the lineup when he is eligible to come off of the DL on August 23.

Mets manager Terry Collins, DiComo writes, expects that Reyes will begin working out soon, though it will still take time after that to begin baseball activities.  Mets fans will remember that Reyes missed nearly three weeks in June and July with a strain in a different part of the same hamstring.

Reyes, despite missing all this time, still leads the National League in batting (.336 average), triples and runs scored, and he is second in hits and stolen bases.  Assuming he comes back by September, he should get enough at bats to qualify for the batting title.

MY TAKE:

Reyes really needs to have a strong finish because all the teams interested in his services for next year and beyond are going to want to see how he comes back from another injury to the left hammy.  If he struggles upon returning and hits something like .240 in September, it’s just another thing that could cost him money come free agency.
