Nick Klopsis of Newsday caught up with Jose Reyes at a red-carpet event for ESPN Magazine last night where Jose Reyes told him that the Mets have not even contacted him yet.
The four-time All-Star shortstop said Thursday that the Mets have not reached out to him yet regarding a new deal.
“They’ll probably start up within the next few days,” the free-agent-to-be said at a red-carpet event for ESPN the Magazine’s Body Issue. “But right now, everything’s quiet.”
I find this very odd mostly because Sandy Alderson said on August 17th and again on the second to last day of the season, that re-signing Jose Reyes would be the top priority of the Mets this offseason.
Currently, the Mets are the only team permitted to speak with Reyes. All 29 other major league teams must wait until five days after the end of the World Series.
It’s been a week since the season ended, and there’s still been no attempt by the Mets to contact their prized shortstop.
If Reyes is the number one priority, and this is how top priorities are handled, I have some deep concerns about the rest of this offseason.
