The Mets opened up a three-game, weekend series against the division rival Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Citi Field, and the Mets brought thunder early on, as Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera hit back-to-back jacks to open up the scoring for the Amazin’s.
It’s the second time in franchise history that the first two batters of a game have homered. The only other time it happened was July 12, 2007 when Reyes and Ruben Gotay did so off Cincinnati’s Bronson Arroyo.
Reyes has been a revelation for the Mets since rejoining the team this year, injecting adrenaline into a barren lineup and showing shades of the player he once was in his hay day in a New York uniform.
Reyes is slashing a respectable .274/.328/.453 in 28 games for the Mets and appears to only be getting stronger every game he plays.
As for Asdrubal Cabrera, the veteran has been white hot since returning from injury, hitting .346/.357/.500 in his last seven games.
If these two can stay hot, the Mets are looking good for the rest of the season, and will score more runs with the production at the top of the lineup.
