Sportico reports that New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has reached an agreement to purchase a team in the new professional golf league backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The agreement gives Cohen rights in the New York market for when the league begins play in January of 2024.

The TGL is expected to consist of six teams, with four of them now sold with the news of Cohen getting the New York franchise. Fenway Sports Group bought the Boston team, Arthur Blank purchased the Atlanta franchise, and Serena and Venus Williams have the Los Angeles team with entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian.

Each founding club will hold a 3% stake in the single-entity league and will participate in league-wide revenue sharing.

Along with Woods and McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Adam Scott, and Billy Horschel have committed to playing in the league.

“It’s an innovative concept that combines technology, data and a competitive team format in primetime on Mondays,” Andrew B. Cohen, co-founder of Cohen Private Ventures, told Sportico. “Given the way golf is played now, both in simulators and on the course, I think it’s going to combine all those elements.”
