Brandon Nimmo has truly come into his own this season. When the New York Mets signed Starling Marte, it was a surprise to see Marte heading to right field after his track record at center field. This due to Marte’s cannon he has for an arm. Though, the Mets and Buck Showalter showed unaltered faith in Nimmo’s ability.

With the second half of the season just beginning, the speculation of Nimmo and the Mets extending their relationship is starting to catch fire. During the offseason, Brandon Nimmo expressed the fact that he wanted to stay a Met because it’s all he has ever known.

Nimmo expressed that, “I love being a part of the Mets. I love being a part of this team.”

He further explained his thoughts during an interview with Mike Puma of the New York Post by stating, “This is all I have known, it’s what I have grown up in. It would be very special to stick around here. There are not many guys that get to spend their whole careers with one team, but it has to fit for both sides. They have come and expressed they would like me to be a Met and we’ll see what that means after the season … they like what I have brought to the table.”

Brandon Nimmo has earned the right to a long-term extension as he has continued to develop into one of the leaders in the clubhouse. He’s become one of the better center fielders in the game and has also been one of the team’s more consistent hitters as well this season. This despite a rough patch recently.

Nimmo has a slash line of .263/.345/.426 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI. He’s become the Mets’ everyday leadoff hitter. However, one has to wonder if he and the Mets can come to terms this offseason. Brandon Nimmo went on to hire agent Scott Boras this offseason, which could be good for Nimmo but bad for the Mets due to Boras’ track record.

The Mets have several key players heading into free agency this season with three of them being their starting pitchers. While the priority may be extending Jacob deGrom, Nimmo should be second in line as a quality outfielder is pretty hard to find these days especially when they are your leadoff hitter. One has to wonder though, with Boras on Nimmo’s side now, will Brandon Nimmo’s price be too high for the Mets’ liking?
