John Harper of the New York Daily News is reporting that a source ‘with knowledge of the Mets’ plans is saying the front office will do more to improve the team this winter than is being portrayed publicly.

Harper believes this is partly a reaction to the pounding that owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon are taking publicly for their apparent intention to cut payroll.

If you hadn’t noticed, our own Joe D. is doing some of the pounding has waged a daily battle against the Wilpons on Twitter. This is a small sampling…

The free agent market is still booming with position players despite it being Jan. 5 as teams hope to wait out some of the top tier guys.

One name that hasn’t garnered much attention in the rumor mill is former Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas.

Harper believes that Moustakas could be in play for the Mets assuming he falls into their budget as they monitor the situation.

Moustakas, 29, slashed .272/.314/.521/.835 with 75 runs, 24 doubles, 85 RBI and career-high 38 home runs in 2017 for the Royals.

The two-time All-Star struggled defensively though with 3.6 UZR/150 and -8 defensive runs saved, but otherwise he’s been known as a pretty good defender. In 2016 he had a 15.5 UZR/150 and one DRS.

Over his seven season big league career Moustakas has been a 11.4 WAR player including 1.8 WAR this past season.

MLB Trade Rumors predicted that Moose would get a five-year, $85 million contract this offseason.

The Mets currently have veteran Asdrubal Cabrera penciled in at third base and like Harper says later in the article when it comes to the Metropolitan spending big this offseason, I’ll believe it when I see it.
